Máchovo jezero, or "Macháč" as most of us know it, was established on the instructions of the Czech King and Emperor Karel IV. as early as the 14th century, originally as the Velký rybník. Access

Bus transport is provided by line number 669 from Stará Boleslav, with the nearest stop, Lhota, obec, located within a 300-metre walking distance. It is possible to travel by train to the Dřísy station (line 232), from where the lake is approximately a 2 km walk. The main swimming season and full operation of the paid entrance usually last from 1 May to 30 September, with access restricted outside of this period.

Construction of the Horní Bečva dam began as early as 1933, but it was not completed and put into operation until 1947. As is often the case with dams, the original intention was to prevent destructive floods in the Bečva river basin. Several similarly small reservoirs were planned for the area, but only the Bystřička dam was realised alongside Horní Bečva. An interesting fact is that a condition for the construction of the reservoir was the non-interruption of road traffic leading through the valley; therefore, the road first had to be diverted from the valley to the right slope of the future reservoir. The last reconstruction took place between 2005 and 2006, when Horní Bečva was drained.

When heading to the Horní Bečva waterworks, visitors should expect grassy beaches and a gradual sandy entry into the water. The maximum depth in the reservoir is around 7 metres, and the dam measures only 250 metres. If you are expecting crystal-clear water, you may be disappointed. The water in the Horní Bečva dam is naturally slightly turbid and tends to have a brownish-green colour. Lipenská přehrada or the Lipno reservoir is the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic, situated within the territory of the Národní park Šumava. During the filling of the dam, several predominantly agricultural homesteads were flooded. The main task of the Vodní nádrž Karolinka is to ensure a supply of drinking water for the inhabitants of the Vsetín, Klobouky, Valašsko, and Zlín regions, as well as to regulate the water flow of the river and protect the surroundings from potential floods. During warm and dry months, on the other hand, it serves to maintain at least the minimum flow.

The length of the Karolinka dam wall is 391.5 metres, its width is 5 metres, and its height above the riverbed is 35.5 metres. The water surface area is just under 51 hectares. In 1995, two turbine sets were installed at the bottom outlet closures, allowing for water extraction from three different depth levels in the reservoir, which enabled the construction of a small hydroelectric power plant.

In terms of water quality, the Vodní nádrž Karolinka is among the highest-quality reservoirs in the Morava river basin. This is mainly due to the purity of the Velká Stanovnice river, which rises directly on the slopes of the Javorníky. In the reservoir, the water neither overheats nor becomes polluted from the surroundings, as there are almost no villages or industrial or agricultural enterprises in its immediate vicinity. With its clear surface, it attracts people primarily in the summer for swimming and water sports. However, this is strictly prohibited due to the purpose of the dam.

Therefore, one should at least go for a walk around the water reservoir, which provides excellent living conditions for a large number of plants and animals. The Vodní nádrž Souš reservoir is situated on the Černá Desná river above the town of Desná in the Liberecký kraj region. The dams were built between 1911 and 1915 as flood protection for the Jizerské hory mountains. However, the dam on the Bílá Desná burst just 10 months after its completion in 1916, sweeping away 100 houses and claiming 65 lives. After this disaster, local residents insisted on draining Souš and only refilling it after a thorough inspection of the reservoir's condition to ensure that such a catastrophe would not happen again. The Souš dam was therefore only refilled after reconstruction between 1924 and 1927. In the 1970s, the dam originally served, among other things, for recreation, but since 1973 it has served as a drinking water reservoir for the Tanvaldsko and Jablonecko regions. Fishing and swimming are therefore understandably prohibited, and the area around the Souš reservoir is strictly protected.

The Souš dam covers an area of nearly 86 hectares. Its embankment is earth-fill, and the concrete wall reaches a depth of 8 metres. A 19.1-metre-high tower structure stands in the reservoir, used for water abstraction for water supply purposes. As this is a drinking water reservoir, a water treatment plant stands on its right bank, where water hardness is reduced and its oxidisability and colour are adjusted. Only once treated in this way does the water continue through pipes to the water reservoir in Tanvald and from there to Jablonec nad Nisou.

Hostivařská přehrada, or the Vodní nádrž Hostivař reservoir, is the largest body of water within the territory of the capital city of Prague. Access

Jezero Konětopy is located north of the village of Konětopy. By car, access is available from the I/10 or II/610 roads. A free car park with limited capacity is available at the site. The closest public transport stop for bus services is Konětopy, obec, located about 500 metres from the site. The Dřísy railway station (line 232) is about a 3 km walk away. The main swimming season and full operation of services usually last from 1 June to 31 August, though swimming is also possible outside the season without services.

The surroundings of the quarry consist of grassy and earthy areas suitable for sunbathing or picnics, and a network of narrow beaten paths leading around the entire perimeter of the quarry. As this is a natural site, there are no snack bars, changing rooms, or toilets here; therefore, it is necessary to equip yourself with everything you need in advance.

Who is the place suitable for?

The location is ideal for lovers of natural swimming and people looking for silence and privacy in the bosom of nature. It is also sought after by young people and groups of friends due to the possibility of jumping into the water from the rocks; however, due to the absence of lifeguards and rescue equipment, it is recommended only for proficient swimmers. What can you visit in the surroundings?

Just a short distance from the quarry is the village of Drysice, where you can view the historic building of the local granary or the kostel Narození Panny Marie. For history lovers, the town of Vyškov with its zoopark and Dinopark is within accessible distance. The Orlík Dam was constructed between 1954 and 1961 in the territory of the Písek and Příbram districts, resulting in the flooding of up to 10 municipalities. Its length reaches 68 kilometres, and it forms a part of the Vltava Cascade. It holds the Czech primary position in terms of water volume and is the second-largest dam in the Czech Republic by surface area. At the same time, however, it ranks among the thinnest dams in the world.

The name was derived from the Orlík Castle, which towers on a rock above the reservoir. During the construction of the dam, aside from the aforementioned flooding of certain municipalities, it was also necessary to relocate an entire church. Concurrently, the Orlík Hydroelectric Power Station was built, which was even awarded at the EXPO 58 exhibition in Brussels. The construction of the entire dam was very demanding and therefore claimed several victims among the workers.

After all, the Orlík Dam was marked by sad and tragic events later on as well. Based on investigations, several bodies of Czech businessmen who were supposed to fall into oblivion beneath the water surface were recovered from the reservoir between 1991 and 1993. Even before that, another three victims were found.

However, the Orlík Reservoir also has its better sides. Several campsites with beaches lie along its shores and are frequently used by holidaymakers for swimming or windsurfing. Refreshment stalls and boat rental shops are also available. Visitors may thus choose, for example, Popelíky, Trhovky, Lavičky, Radava, or Charvátská pláň, which is sought after mainly by naturists.

From the harbour in Orlík nad Vltavou, visitors can also reach the nearby Zvíkov Castle via boat transport and thus plan a wonderful trip combining swimming and sightseeing. Orlík is a significant work and inherently belongs to the list of attractive places suitable for recreation. The Těrlická přehrada is located near the village of Těrlicko and has an area of 267 hectares. It lies in the Karviná District, in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The water reservoir was built between 1955 and 1964. Its main purpose was to ensure industrial water supplies for nearby mines and ironworks in Třinec.

The reservoir now also fulfils a flood protection function and simultaneously regulates the flow in the Stonávka, which, outside the Karviná District, also drains part of the Frýdek-Místek District. During the construction of the reservoir, the village of Těrlicko was partially flooded, as was a section of the road connecting Ostrava and Český Těšín. Subsequently, a part of this connection was relocated and now runs along the southern edge of the Těrlická přehrada.

The Těrlická přehrada water reservoir is currently a popular recreational destination. The area is also attractive due to its close proximity to the Polish border. Visitors are invited to set off here for a holiday throughout the year. In summer, the reservoir is primarily used by water sports enthusiasts. Aside from swimming, visitors can also fish, cruise the water surface on boats, or water ski. A circuit for motorized racers has been built on the western shore of the reservoir.

Conversely, in the southern part of the reservoir, where the meandering Stonávka flows into the reservoir, visitors will find the Těrlické mokřady nature trail. A cycling route also runs around the Těrlická přehrada, which is part of the Těšín Silesia Euroregion circuit and connects other interesting places in this part of the Beskids. During warm summer days, a decrease in water quality sometimes occurs. A large amount of algae appears in the reservoir. In winter, the Těrlická přehrada transforms into a paradise for ice skaters. If there is a fresh snow cover, cross-country skiers can also be encountered here. In past years, when there was a proper winter and temperatures consistently stayed deep below freezing, winter races in ice skating, skiing, and other winter pleasures took place on the Těrlická přehrada, widely attended not only by locals but also by visitors from the wider surroundings.

Historic Art Nouveau dam on the Doubrava River

Přehrada Pařížov is a unique historic dam located on the Doubrava river near the town of Chotěboř in the Havlíčkův Brod district in the Kraj Vysočina. It was built between 1910 and 1913 and is one of the oldest and most beautiful dams in the Czech Republic; it is a national cultural monument. Its dam wall is constructed of stone and features distinctive Art Nouveau elements, which are rare in Central Europe. It serves for flood protection and as an aesthetic experience.

Access

A well-maintained access road leads to the dam from the village of Pařížov (accessible from road number 345). A free car park with limited capacity is available for motorists, located directly by the dam wall. From there, it is a short and easy walk along an asphalt road to the dam wall. The dam is a popular destination for photographers. The nearest railway station, Chotěboř, is less than five kilometres away.

What is worth exploring

Nearby is the Národní přírodní rezervace Údolí Doubravy, which is known for its deep canyons and rock formations. Less than ten kilometres to the northeast lies Zámek Žďár nad Sázavou with the Poutní kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého na Zelené hoře (UNESCO). It is also worth visiting the historical town of Chotěboř with the Městské muzeum Chotěboř and the Zřícenina hradu Lipnice nad Sázavou.

Plumlovská přehrada is an extensive water body on the border of the Drahanská vrchovina and Haná. It lies on the Hloučela River about 3 kilometres from Prostějov. It ranks among our oldest reservoirs and covers an area of 65 hectares. Its construction began as early as 1913 and initially did not meet with great enthusiasm among the population. Originally, it was supposed to be completed within five years, but World War I interrupted the plans. The complete finishing of the Plumlov dam thus took place only in 1932.

The main reason for construction was primarily flood protection and the support of the flow of the Hloučela River. However, a flood came sooner, and so in 1920, a large amount of water from persistent rain caused such damage at the dam that the final construction cost increased up to twelvefold.

Now, Plumlovská přehrada serves mainly tourists and athletes. Grassy beaches and refreshments are available, but for anyone who is not entertained by merely lying by the water, the offer of one of the rental shops can be utilized to cross the surface criss-cross on a paddle boat or a small boat. Other water sports also do not remain in the background, and so it is possible to see skilled paddleboarders or fast kayakers.

The Plumlov water reservoir is also important from a cultural perspective. Various significant events for the general public have taken place here, for example, the International Music Festival for Children and Youth with Disabilities as well as a large number of other concerts. An interesting and relatively popular event is also the dragon boat race, which takes place on various water bodies throughout the republic.

Not far from the dam is the early Baroque zámek Plumlov, part of which is also the torso of the never-completed castle of the same name. The Římov reservoir was built on the Malše River, south of České Budějovice, near the village of Římov, and it also extends into the cadastral areas of the villages of Velešín and Svatý Jan nad Malší. It was constructed between 1971 and 1978 as a drinking water reservoir for České Budějovice and the surrounding area. The Římov dam is inaccessible to swimmers and anglers. In terms of the reservoir's volume and the volume of water withdrawn, it is currently the largest water supply reservoir in South Bohemia.

Preparation of the project began in the late 1960s, when a decision was made regarding the location of the dam near Římov and the water treatment plant near the village of Plav. Actual construction commenced in January 1974. The dam embankment was completed by the end of 1976. Filling of the reservoir began in June 1978.

The total volume of the reservoir reaches almost 34 million m3, and the flooded area covers 210 hectares. The embankment dam is 290 m long and 47.5 m high. A road and a red tourist trail run along the dam between Římov and Svatý Jan nad Malší. The reinforced concrete tower structure is the location of the shaft for the small bottom outlet, as well as two water intake shafts and two additional bottom outlets. The upper machine room at the top is accessible via a steel footbridge from the dam crest. A small hydroelectric power plant is located in the lower machine room.

As the main source of drinking water for South Bohemia, the Římov reservoir is protected by conservation zones; the first zone is forested, while in the second and third zones, any activity is governed by management principles. Wastewater treatment plants exist in larger villages within the reservoir basin.

If visitors wish to view the dam from various angles, they can walk along the yellow trail from Římov to Velešín on the western bank, and a blue tourist trail winds from Římov to Kaplice on the eastern bank. In addition to the dam, visitors can view the Jesuit Baroque château in Římov, while the castle ruins can be seen in Velešín. It is certainly worthwhile to take a trip to České Budějovice, where visitors can visit the South Bohemian Museum and take a photo by the famous Samson Fountain. Vodní nádrž Rozkoš, completed in 1969 on the stream of the same name, ranks as the eighth largest reservoir in the Czech Republic. It spans an area of 800 hectares, situated near the town of Česká Skalice. The average depth of the Rozkoš reservoir is 10 metres. It is sometimes referred to as the "East Bohemian Sea", as it serves as one of the points of interest in Eastern Bohemia, located in the very heart of the Kladské pomezí region.

Its primary function is flood protection, and it also serves to support the flow of the Úpa river, which flows into the Labe. The reservoir is utilised for recreation, water sports, and fishing. Visitors may arrive by car and park at the car park located directly at the reservoir. Naturally, it is also possible to travel in a slightly more adventurous manner by train or bus. For athletes, the Vodní nádrž Rozkoš is accessible on foot or by bicycle.

In the immediate vicinity, visitors will find everything necessary to ensure a successful holiday at Rozkoš. Sandy beaches are located around the reservoir. The history of this body of water is closely linked to the end of coal mining, after which it was necessary to proceed with the overall reclamation and revitalisation of the affected area. Mining in the pits ceased in the year 2000. However, another 8 years passed before the filling of Medard could begin. It only reached its planned water level in 2016. An interesting fact is that in 2020, it was the largest artificially created lake in the Czech Republic. Its total area is 500 ha, it is 4 km long, 1.5 km wide, and its depth is an impressive 57 m.

Primarily, jezero Medard serves as a venue for water sports. For swimming, the nearby jezero Michal, which serves as a natural swimming pool, is more suitable. Furthermore, the surroundings of jezero Medard are still undergoing extensive revitalisation, which brings visitors fishing clubs and bird islands, allowing for the real-time observation of water birds. You can also look forward to a walk along the Alej přátelství, which was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Republic. It is interesting to note that buckets are available next to the trees, which can be used to draw water from the lake for watering. A cycling path also leads through its surroundings, so cycling enthusiasts will certainly enjoy their time here as well.

Mostecké jezero stretches across the northern part of the city of Most. Originally, the historical city of Most stood in this area. In the second half of the twentieth century, reserves were discovered under the city, leading to its demolition. The Ležáky brown coal mine was established here, where mining took place until the end of the 1990s. As part of the reclamation process in the new millennium, the pit was flooded, and it has become a popular recreational spot.

The lake covers an area of 309 ha, making it the second-largest lake in the Czech Republic. Its width reaches 1.9 km, its length 3 km, and its depth reaches up to 71 m in some places. The filling of the pit, which remained here after mining activities, began on 24 October 2008. A feeder was created to the lake, through which water flowed in from the Ohře river. The filling process took place until September 2014, with a break between 2012 and 2013, when the reaction of the surrounding area was monitored. Even after it was filled, the water surface was only in trial operation. It was opened to the public on 12 September 2020, following the modification of the banks and the construction of access roads. The entire area that underwent revitalisation represents 1,300 ha.

At present, the lake contains clear and very clean water. Terraced pebble beaches lead to the water surface, and you will also find piers here that allow easier access to the water. On the shore, you will find a beach volleyball court, a large children's playground, and ping-pong tables. Vacationers with their four-legged friends will also find their own special beaches by the lake. Thanks to its size, there is space on the lake not only for swimming and water sports but also for boat transport. A quiet zone intended for the development of fauna and flora is also designated by the lake. The clear water of the lake, with visibility of up to 8 m, also attracts divers here. Fishing is not possible here due to the controlled stock; eight species of fish live in the water, including northern pike and catfish.

A 9 km-long circuit leads around Mostecké jezero, and you can also walk along an educational trail (2.5 km) that explains the process of filling the lake. During your wanderings, especially in winter, you can observe birds; the water surface is a significant wintering ground, with 26 species having been observed here, including the white-tailed eagle. The cycling path attracts many cyclists and in-line skaters to this area. You can easily reach the lake directly by car via the road network. A spacious car park can be found above the main beach, and in summer, a nearby grassy area also serves this purpose; parking is free of charge. In 2021, facilities with sanitary amenities, refreshments, and seating with a view were built by the water. The Uhelné safari will show you how mining takes place in the pits during full operation, and you will also become familiar with the processes of subsequent landscape reclamation. The historical pride of the city is the hrad Hněvín castle. Those who prefer looking at the stars will enjoy a visit to the observatory on Hněvín or the Most planetarium. The city has also thought of those who are not fans of natural swimming; the Aquadrom, with its outdoor and indoor pools, attractions, and wellness zone, is in operation for them.

On the territory of the Národní park Šumava, several interesting lakes can be found. One of them is Plešné jezero, which was formerly also called Plekenštejnské jezero or was known by its German designation Plöckensteinsee. This glacial lake lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Nová Pec, in the Prachatice District. Its maximum depth is 18.3 m and the volume of retained water is around 617,000 m³. It is located at an altitude of 1,090 m a. s. l.

The lake received its naming after Mount Plechý, which is the highest mountain of the Czech part of the Šumava. Water drains from the lake through Jezerní potok and flows into the Vltava River near the Lipno Dam. The lake originated from one of the eleven valley glaciers that were located in the Šumava during the Quaternary period. The edges of Plešné jezero are bordered by a high moraine dam, and at the foot of the mountain, they are carved into the exposed walls of the glacial cirque. The height of the lake wall is up to 260 m.

According to historical records, the first person to explore Plešné jezero was the Rožmberk regent Jakub Krčín z Jelčan. The lake was later used to supply water to the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál. Josef Rosenauer, who was the builder of the canal, thoroughly sealed the lake's moraine and placed discharge sluice gates into the dam. Thanks to this, it was possible to regulate the water in the canal. A small meteorological station is also located on the dam, which investigates and records phenomena, especially precipitation and winds, which have an effect on fluctuations in the lake's water level.

In 1999, the Správa Národního parku Šumava carried out a repair of the dam. Thanks to this, the lake became more accessible and stable. And gradually, a larger number of tourists began to come here as well. At the top of the northwest wall stands the Stifterův památník, which commemorates the well-known Šumava poet Adalbert Stifter. From the platform in front of the monument, there is a magnificent view of the surface of Plešné jezero. The Zážitková naučná stezka "Duch pralesa" leads from this monument back to the lake. And there is one more memorial plaque here. It is dedicated to Jan Nepomuk ze Schwarzenberku, who merited the construction of the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál.

And how do visitors get to Plešné jezero? They can take it by bike, for example. Cycle route No. 1029 from the municipality of Stožec leads visitors all the way to the lake after 12 kilometres. The path also leads partially along the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál, and there is truly much to admire. The magnificent nature of the national park will surely captivate visitors. The last part of the route is somewhat more demanding, but the destination is then well worth it. On the return journey, visitors can disconnect from the route at the navigational canal onto cycle route No. 1023 and get back to Stožec via a circuit through the settlement of Jelení.

In addition to Plešné jezero, other lakes are also located in the Šumava, such as Černé jezero, which is the largest natural lake in the Czech Republic, or Čertovo jezero. Both lie in the vicinity of Železná Ruda, which is a significant sports and tourist center.

Already during the last century, Plešné jezero was a popular destination for tourists who visited the Šumava nature. Therefore, a tourist base Lucemburská chata was built near the lake in 1911. It became the property of the Klub českých turistů, but in 1948 it was seized by the Pohraniční stráž and adapted for the use of the border guard company. It left the building in 1989, and the cottage was demolished.

Věstonická nádrž is the middle reservoir of the Nové Mlýny waterworks on the Dyje river in the South Moravian Region, in the Břeclav district. The remaining two reservoirs, Mušovská and Novomlýnská, are used for recreation today, but Věstonická nádrž has been left to natural processes; swimming is prohibited, and thanks to this, it is now a rare ornithological site. The history of the creation of Věstonická nádrž is contradictory and sad, even though it is a unique nature reserve today.

The Novomlýnské nádrže reservoirs were built between 1975 and 1988. Věstonická nádrž was test-filled in 1981, but it was discovered that the dam was leaking in places, so it was only filled after necessary repairs in 1987. Due to the construction of the reservoirs, the historic village of Mušov, which had been mentioned since the 12th century, was demolished. The residents had to move out, and almost the entire village is now under the surface of the Věstonická přehrada. The only reminder of Mušov is an island in the middle of the reservoir, originally a hill, with the kostel sv. Linharta, probably the oldest Romanesque ecclesiastical building in the Břeclav area. However, it is beginning to fall into disrepair, as the island is difficult to access, the maintenance of the monument is complex, and entry to the reserve is restricted.

Věstonická nádrž was declared a nature reserve on 11 February 1994, and its area covers more than one thousand hectares. The reason for the protection is the nesting of rare bird species, especially tundra geese, but one can also see white-tailed eagles, some species of gulls, black and white storks flying over the surface, and peregrine falcons hunting here as well. However, Věstonická nádrž can only be observed from the path leading along the dam separating it from the lower Novomlýnská nádrž, i.e., the road connecting Strachotín and Dolní Věstonice. Via the second dam, which separates the upper Mušovská nádrž, one can reach Pohořelice and Mikulov.

Should you wish to learn more about Věstonická nádrž, set off along the educational trail of the same name around the reservoir, which begins in Pasohlávky, leads through several natural monuments on the way to the dam of the Strachotínský rybník pond, and further to Dolní Věstonice, where there is also a museum with the exhibition Věk lovců a mamutů, which will introduce visitors to the local archaeological finds. The route ends at Rybníkářství Pohořelice, where one can further supplement knowledge about the fish that live in the Novomlýnské nádrže reservoirs. Znojemská přehrada (also known as the Znojmo reservoir) is a medium-sized water management reservoir located on the Dyje river near the historical town of Znojmo in the Znojmo district, in the Jihomoravský kraj. Water Reservoir Hidden in the Forests of the Lánská obora

Klíčavská přehrada was built between 1948 and 1955 on the Klíčava stream in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Its main purpose is to supply the town of Kladno and its surroundings with high-quality drinking water. The dam wall is a concrete gravity structure and reaches a height of over 50 meters. Below the dam, visitors will find a water treatment plant, which is architecturally interesting and built of red stone.

Currently, the reservoir is part of the Lánská obora and falls within the first protection zone of the water source, which is why it is inaccessible to the public. Visitors are permitted to access only the top of the dam wall, which offers a view of the water surface surrounded by deep forests. Neither swimming nor fishing is permitted here.

Access

A marked red tourist trail leads to the dam from the village of Zbečno (approx. 3 km). For motorists, parking is available on the village green in Zbečno or in a smaller car park near the information board before the no-entry sign (approx. 500 m from the dam). The nearest railway station is "Zbečno".

In nearby Zbečno, visitors can explore the historical Hamousův statek, which is a magnificent example of folk architecture. Access

Skryjská jezírka are located in the deep valley of the Zbirožský potok near the village of Skryje. Access by car is possible as far as the village of Skryje, where a free car park is available. From there, it is necessary to continue on foot along the red-marked tourist trail through the valley, with the walk to the pools and waterfall being approximately 2.5 km long. The nearest railway station, Skryje (line 176), is about 3 km away. The area is accessible all year round, but the best conditions for hiking are during the season from April to October. During the winter, the trail can be slippery.

What is worth seeing

In the vicinity of Skryjská jezírka, visitors may explore the Zřícenina Hradu Týřov, which is located on the opposite slope above the Berounka river. Visitors may also tour the town of Rakovník with its Husovo náměstí and Baroque town hall. The lake is easily accessible by public transport, located within walking distance (approx. 10 minutes) from the terminus station of the metro line B – Zličín. For motorists, it is best to use the high-capacity car parks of the shopping centres in Zličín (e.g., Metropole Zličín), from where a footpath leads to the water. There is no official car park directly at the reservoir.

In the immediate vicinity of the lake, the new Park Na Prameništi has been built, offering relaxation zones, play elements for children, and footbridges over wetlands. Just a short distance away is the bustling Zličín shopping zone with numerous shops and services. For transport history enthusiasts, the nearby Pražský Semmering is of interest – a railway line with viaducts in Hlubočepy (accessible by train from Zličín). Water is fed into the lake by the small river Metuje. Two waterfalls were created at the lake's outlet - the Velký Adršpašský vodopád and, 50 metres further downstream, the Malý Adršpašský vodopád.

Visiting the rock city is rather a summer affair, but even if visitors head here in winter, they will not regret it. The surface of the lake freezes, and the ice creates magical patterns. The waterfalls transform into icefalls during the winter and offer a breathtaking spectacle. Rides standardly begin in May, or in April in the event of fine weather. It is best to inquire in advance.

In addition to the boat rides, many other interesting stops await visitors within these sandstone rocks, which form the largest rock city in the Czech Republic. For example, Sloní náměstí, Krakonošova lenoška, or Milenci and Starosta se starostovou. They received their names according to what the individual rocks resemble with their shapes. Visitors are also recommended to view the ruins of Adršpach Castle. Not much of the original castle has been preserved, but the views will certainly captivate them.
