With an area of 69,030 hectares, Národní park Šumava is our largest national park. It can be found in South and West Bohemia. From Železná Ruda, it follows the state border with Germany, later with Austria, and from the eastern side, it is bordered by the Lipenská přehrada. It extends across the territory of two regions, namely the Plzeňský kraj and the Jihočeský kraj, and three districts: Český Krumlov, Prachatice, and Klatovy. Together with the German Národní park Bavorský les, it forms the largest continuously forested area in Central Europe. Thanks to this, it is also referred to as the "green heart of Europe." It was declared a national park on 20 March 1991; a year earlier, the territory was inscribed on the UNESCO list as the Šumava biosphere reserve.

Šumavský národní park is part of the Chráněná krajinná oblast Šumava. Within the territory of the national park, there are several dozen nature reserves and smaller protected areas. The main reason for declaring the national park was, in particular, the protection of biological communities – spruce forests, primeval forest stands, peat bogs, or corrie lakes. One may also find several endangered animal species here, such as the Eurasian lynx, the western capercaillie, or the Eurasian elk. There are also some insect species that cannot be seen anywhere else but in the local peat bogs.

Národní park Šumava itself can be divided into several separate areas: Šumavské pláně, Železnorudská hornatina, Boubínská hornatina, Želnavská hornatina, and Trojmezenská hornatina with the Vltavská brázda. In terms of altitude, it extends from 600 to 1,378 metres above sea level. The highest point is the mountain Plechý.

According to the method of protection, the park is divided into 3 zones: strict nature, managed nature, and peripheral. Included in the strict nature zone are the most valuable primeval forests and wetlands, which are protected from human influence. In the managed nature zone, one finds the largest part of the forest ecosystems, and in the peripheral zone, there are already places that people may use for tourism, recreation, or, for example, agriculture. Even in the peripheral zone, however, there are certain rules that protect nature from the devastating influence of certain activities.

Nevertheless, Národní park Šumava still has many "enemies." The greatest natural enemy has long been the bark beetle, which is causing significant calamities not only in the Šumava region but throughout our entire republic. Humans also have a negative impact on the local nature. This primarily involves timber harvesting that is not always justified, the construction of tourist centres, or the activities of canoeists on the upper reaches of the Vltava. For this reason, nature conservationists and ecologists are very active here, and one can regularly see them in television reports. The activities within the national park are also overseen by the Správa Národního parku Šumava.

From a hydrological perspective, Šumavský národní park is a significant location. One can find natural watercourses, glacial lakes, and man-made structures here. The territory belongs mainly to the North Sea watershed, with a smaller part belonging to the Black Sea. The Vydra river as well as the longest Czech river, the Vltava, begin their journey here. It rises below Černá hora as the Černý potok and gradually expands with other streams. Near Volary, it is already the true Vltava.

There are three glacial lakes here, namely Plešné jezero, Prášilské jezero, and jezero Laka. On the eastern edge of Národní park Šumava lies the Lipenská přehrada, which was built between 1950 and 1960 as the first stage of the Vltava cascade near Lipno nad Vltavou. The mountain of Klínovec can be found in northwestern Bohemia and is also known by its German name Keilberg or Sonnenwirbel. With its 1,244 metres, it is not only the highest peak of the Krušné hory, but also the highest point of the Karlovy Vary District, the Chomutov District, and the Karlovy Vary and Ústí nad Labem Regions. It was precisely the town of Jáchymov that had an observation tower built on the summit of Mount Klínovec in 1817. It was a popular tourist destination for spa guests from Karlovy Vary, who arrived here in horse-drawn carriages. However, the viewpoint burned down in 1868. Therefore, in 1883, a decision was made to construct a stone lookout tower that would be more resilient not only to fire, but also to the whims of the weather. And thus the Klínovec lookout tower was created, which was later supplemented by an annex with accommodation, refreshments, and a stable for eight horses. Over time, a post office and a telecommunication tower were also established.

Visitors can reach the summit of Klínovec comfortably by cable car. From Jáchymov, the Jáchymov - Klínovec cable car is in operation. This also allows for the transport of cyclists. Visitors from Loučná pod Klínovcem are transported by the Dámská chairlift. From the summit, breathtaking views are offered not only of the Krušnohoří region, but also of the České středohoří, the Doupov Mountains, the Slavkov Forest, or the Šumava.

But the true tourist will, of course, set off on foot. Visitors can start their journey, for example, in Boží Dar, from where an undemanding red route approximately 8 kilometres long leads, which is, however, not suitable for prams. Before the very destination, it has a steeper character. If visitors walk straight along the road, they will shorten the route by roughly half. Adrenaline enthusiasts, on the other hand, will appreciate trail routes of 4 different difficulty levels, which lead from the summit all the way to the cable car, by means of which visitors are comfortably transported back to the summit.

At the foot of the Slavkovský les in the Karlovarský kraj, the royal Gothic hrad Loket towers on a rocky promontory above the Ohře river. This castle in the village of Loket in the Sokolov district was already one of the strongholds on the border with the Chebsko region in the 13th century; it is quite possible that it was built as a border fortress. Since 1989, it has been accessible to the public, who may view an exhibition of porcelain, weapons, and an impressive exhibition on torture law in the premises of the former prison.

The exact date of the founding of hrad Loket is unknown, and the name of its founder is not known with certainty either, but it is assumed that the history of the castle began in the second half of the 12th century. There are written reports from 1234, but it became better known to us only at the beginning of the 14th century, when the future king Karel IV was imprisoned at hrad Loket. In the Middle Ages, hrad Loket faced attempts at conquest many times, but it withstood all attacks and was never conquered. In the 16th century, it became the property of Loket burghers, and city councillors even held meetings here. After being besieged by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War, the castle became a border fortress, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was converted into a prison, which operated until 1948. Since 1992, after several changes, the castle has once again been the property of the city, which has begun a new chapter for the castle, restored its ancient beauty, and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Hrad Loket offers several "bests". For example, the 12th-century rotunda sv. Anežky, which was discovered in 1966, is the smallest rotunda in the world due to its diameter of 3.6 metres. Visitors will also see the largest Czech meteorite here, which allegedly fell into the Loket courtyard. The most prominent landmark of hrad Loket is the 26-metre-high tower, which offers a view of the wide surroundings. In the past, there was a room with a fireplace and a medieval toilet here. Below the castle tower, visitors may visit the permanent exhibition of historical weapons, where both firearms and so-called cold weapons can be seen. The exhibition is also supplemented by plate armour, helmets, and shooting targets. Mothers and grandmothers, in particular, will be delighted by the exhibition of porcelain from the 19th and 20th centuries, manufactured, among other places, in the local Loket porcelain factory. And there is a treasure hidden at hrad Loket, too. Not in a chest, but on the walls. Wall paintings from the beginning of the 15th century were discovered here. However, what interests most visitors the most is the exhibition of torture law. Several cells, which served as a prison between 1822 and 1948, have been preserved at Loket in their original form. For strong stomachs only, there is an authentic depiction of the torture process of the accused, who were supposed to confess to their crimes.

When visiting hrad Loket, however, visitors do not have to rely solely on permanent exhibitions. Cultural events are also frequently held here, offering entertainment for children and adults. Visitors may attend evening or night theatre performances, and children will love the puppet theatre. In the summer months, knightly festivals are held here, vintage festivals in the autumn, and Christmas markets in the winter. In short, hrad Loket is vibrant all year round.

Monumental granite formations in the Ohře river canyon

Svatošské skály, officially named Národní přírodní památka Jan Svatoš, represent a geomorphologically unique granite rock formation located in the romantic valley of the Ohře river, in the Karlovarský kraj, between Karlovy Vary (the Doubí district) and the town of Loket. These rock massifs are composed of Loket granite and were formed by the erosive action of the river, frost weathering, and the gradual removal of rock, which led to the creation of massive rock pillars, prisms, and pyramids. Some of the rock towers reach an impressive height of up to 50 metres. The area was declared protected as early as 1933. According to an ancient legend about Jan Svatoš, who broke a promise made to a water nymph, the nymph turned his entire wedding procession into stone formations. The rocks are thus named after the individual wedding participants and bear names such as Ženich (a massive rock chimney), Nevěsta, Páter, Svědkové, Muzikanti, and Tchyně. This picturesque place inspired the famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud.

How to get there

Svatošské skály are located approximately 10 km southwest of the centre of Karlovy Vary and are accessible exclusively to pedestrians, cyclists, and water tourists, as motor vehicles are prohibited from entering this protected area. The most popular and simplest access is on foot or by bike from Karlovy Vary, specifically from the Doubí district. In Karlovy Vary-Doubí, there is a park-and-ride car park, from which a flat path leads along the Ohře river. From the car park, a route approximately 2.5 to 3 km long leads to the rocks following the blue tourist trail, which is also part of cycle route No. 204. From the centre of Karlovy Vary, you can also reach Doubí by bus number 305. A second option is to set out on foot from the town of Loket, where a route approximately 7 km long begins at the Goethův pomník. Directly at the rocks, a romantic suspension bridge intended for pedestrians and cyclists serves to cross the river.

Svatošské skály are located on the Naučná stezka Doubí – Svatošské skály, where you will learn interesting facts about the geology, archaeology, and history of this place at twelve stops. Together with the neighbouring German resort of Fichtelberg, it forms an extensive network of perfectly groomed ski slopes of varying difficulty levels. The resort lies near the D5 motorway (Prague – Plzeň – Rozvadov), from which one easily turns off towards the town of Přimda. Parking is provided for visitors directly by the ski resort. For travel by public transport, bus connections to the town of Přimda can be utilized, from which the resort is accessible on foot or via local transport.

Access

Skryjská jezírka are located in the deep valley of the Zbirožský potok near the village of Skryje. Access by car is possible as far as the village of Skryje, where a free car park is available. From there, it is necessary to continue on foot along the red-marked tourist trail through the valley, with the walk to the pools and waterfall being approximately 2.5 km long. The nearest railway station, Skryje (line 176), is about 3 km away. The area is accessible all year round, but the best conditions for hiking are during the season from April to October. Other starting points include Pec pod Čerchovem (following the blue trail, approx. 4.5 km with a greater elevation gain) or Česká Kubice, from where the historical Hanova stezka leads (red and subsequently blue trail), approximately 7.5 km long. A car park is available for motorists in Capartice. During the tourist season, bus transport to the summit is also usually available.

The surroundings of Čerchov are crisscrossed by hiking trails that lead to the points of interest of the Chodsko region and the Český les. From the east, it is bordered by the town of Beroun, and from the west by Rakovník. The area is sometimes also referred to as the land of Ota Pavel, as this writer set his most famous works here, such as Smrt krásných srnců.

One year before its official declaration as a protected landscape area, CHKO Křivoklátsko became an important UNESCO biosphere reserve. At the same time, thanks to its bird area, it also prides itself on its membership in the Natura 2000 network. For the future, a transition from a protected landscape area to the highest level of protection – a national park – is planned.

The drainage of most of the territory of CHKO Křivoklátsko is managed by the Berounka river, which flows through its centre and creates deep canyons in the landscape on its way. In the western area, one can find Skryjská jezírka, which, together with a waterfall, are formed by the Zbirožský potok. Otters, crayfish, and kingfishers live here. A nature trail that is about 3 kilometres long leads here from the nearby village of Skryje. At the same time, visitors will learn that the village is an important paleontological site, famous thanks to the French researcher Joachim Barrande.

Tourists arriving in this area, however, are primarily drawn by the ascent to the highest peak of CHKO Křivoklátsko, which is Těchovín. Water Reservoir Hidden in the Forests of the Lánská obora

Klíčavská přehrada was built between 1948 and 1955 on the Klíčava stream in the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Its main purpose is to supply the town of Kladno and its surroundings with high-quality drinking water. The dam wall is a concrete gravity structure and reaches a height of over 50 meters. Below the dam, visitors will find a water treatment plant, which is architecturally interesting and built of red stone.

Currently, the reservoir is part of the Lánská obora and falls within the first protection zone of the water source, which is why it is inaccessible to the public. Visitors are permitted to access only the top of the dam wall, which offers a view of the water surface surrounded by deep forests. Neither swimming nor fishing is permitted here.

A marked red tourist trail leads to the dam from the village of Zbečno (approx. 3 km). For motorists, parking is available on the village green in Zbečno or in a smaller car park near the information board before the no-entry sign (approx. 500 m from the dam). An interesting fact is that in 2020, it was the largest artificially created lake in the Czech Republic. Its total area is 500 ha, it is 4 km long, 1.5 km wide, and its depth is an impressive 57 m.

The most extensive ruin in Bohemia is hrad Rabí in the Klatovy district in the Plzeňský kraj region. This castle complex was built sometime in the late Middle Ages as a combination of residential and representative spaces with an unfinished defensive system. The dominant feature of hrad Rabí was and still is the residential tower called the donjon, which also serves as a viewpoint overlooking the foothills of the Šumava.

The history of hrad Rabí appears somewhat mysterious, as almost nothing is known with certainty about its beginnings. Documented mentions date only from the 14th century regarding the lords of Rýzmberk. They stood on the side against the Hussites, and therefore in the years 1420 and 1421 Jan Žižka besieged and conquered the castle. During the second conquest, however, he himself lost his second eye. Although the castle was considerably damaged, the owners received funds for its restoration for their loyalty to King Zikmund. The most prominent personality among the castle owners was Půta Švihovský, but after his death in 1504, disputes arose over the property and the inheritance was gradually sold off. The final blow to the glory of this extensive castle was dealt by the Thirty Years' War, after which the castle was never successfully fully restored.

In the 18th century, the castle was less comfortable for the owners than the residence in nearby Žichovice, which is why Rabí was left abandoned, later burned down, and its walls were used by local residents as a source of building material. An attempt to save the castle involved minor repairs in the mid-19th century when a viewing platform was created on the donjon, but major changes did not come until the 20th century. Now, hrad Rabí has been under state administration since 1954 and has been on the list of national cultural monuments since 1978.

When visiting the ruin of hrad Rabí, visitors can choose from two basic circuits. The first circuit is simply named Věž. It passes through the large courtyard, the small courtyard with the well, the economic facilities, climbs to the top of the residential tower, and concludes the circuit in the castle cellar, where natural dripstone decoration can be seen. The Palác circuit will introduce visitors to the history of the castle and its architectural development. It will guide visitors through rooms where models of the castle in various historical periods, stove tiles, and archaeological finds are exhibited. After descending from the viewing tower to the cellar, an audiovisual projection about the conquest of the castle by the Hussites is prepared for visitors, and the dungeon is viewed last. These two basic tour circuits standardly take place with a guide in Czech, but it is also possible to book a guide in English or German in advance, or to borrow a text translation in Dutch, Russian, and French. In addition to guided tours, visitors can walk unlimitedly and free of charge through the castle courtyard with artillery fortifications, look into the former castle stable, and view the exhibition in the underground part of the church.

Since this is a medieval castle, barrier-free access is not available here, but with assistance, wheelchair users can at least reach the large courtyard. Parking is provided off-season on the square of the town of Rabí, and in the summer months, parking areas are designated on the edge of the town, from where visitors can walk to the castle in approximately 15 minutes. Good news for dog lovers is that a dog can accompany visitors on a leash or in a carrier to all parts of the castle. Photography is also permitted in all parts of the castle, provided that the privacy of other visitors and staff is not interfered with. Souvenirs can be purchased at house no. 50 on the way to the square, where toilets are also located. From hrad Rabí, visitors can set out along the Krajem Půty Švihovského trail. A pleasant, undemanding walk from the square to Žichovice awaits, from there to Horažďovice, above which towers the freely accessible ruin of hrad Prácheň. The zámek Horažďovice château, which houses a museum, is also worth a visit. And once monument exploration becomes tiring, visitors can relax in the local aquapark.

Thanks to professional climbing equipment and expert supervision, visitors do not need to worry about anything, and after conquering the rope route, three zip lines await visitors at the end. Visitors can choose from several difficulty options, and the time required is between one and two hours. The condition is a climber's height of at least 140 cm and a weight of less than 120 kg. Children from approximately six years of age who can reach a height of 145 cm with their hand will then enjoy fun in the dětský lanový park Sušice. Similar and equally entertaining is also the lanový park Prášily, which is on the bank of the Prášilský potok, across which the final zip line leads. The obstacles here are at a height of up to 15 meters, and a total of 18 await visitors. Here too, children from five years of age are catered for in the dětský lanový park Prášily. To make matters worse, visitors can also try a third rope park in Modrava. It is the most demanding park with 21 obstacles, three of which are super difficult. The Lyžařský areál Saporo, also known as the Ski a Trail Park Saporo, is located in the Karlovarský kraj region on the outskirts of the town of Kraslice. The resort is situated at the foot of Sněženský vrch and is characterised by its red-marked, one-kilometre-long ski slope, which primarily appeals to more advanced skiers. The resort uniquely combines winter operations for downhill skiing with summer operations as a modern trail park for mountain biking, ensuring sporting opportunities throughout the year.

Ski areál Saporo was founded in 1972, with significant modernisations taking place in the late 1980s, and lighting for the slope was added in 2006. The lift boarding area lies at an altitude of 580 metres above sea level, and the upper part of the slope reaches an altitude of 742 metres above sea level, representing a total vertical drop of 162 metres. The single downhill track is 1 kilometre long and is classified as a red slope due to its difficulty. Transport for skiers is provided by a fast TATRAPOMA-type lift, 760 metres long, with a capacity of approximately 900 persons per hour. Thanks to the lighting, the popular option of night skiing is also available here. Since 2020, the resort has expanded its offer with summer operations, when the lift is used to transport cyclists to the Trail Park Saporo, which offers both natural and artificially built tracks for DH-downhill and MTB-Enduro.

How to get to the resort

The resort is located by the main road leading from Kraslice in the direction of Luby. For arrival by car, there is a large car park located on the right side of the road (when travelling from the centre of Kraslice), while the access to the slope is located opposite. It is possible to reach Kraslice by bus lines as well as by train. The Kraslice railway station, which is connected to the surrounding network in the Krušné hory mountains, is within a reasonable distance for use.

Of course, downhill skiing is also represented in Lyžařský areál Zadov. The resort is divided into several smaller areas. Lyžařský areál Kobyla offers a 4-chair lift and 2 smaller ski lifts. It is possible to ski on approximately 3 kilometers of ski slopes. Visitors can frolic in the snowpark, which, like the ski slope, is artificially snowed and illuminated. Original ski jumps can also be found here, though they are already out of operation. A ski and snowboard school with a ski equipment rental and service shop is also not lacking.

The second Lyžařský areál U Horejšů is rather suitable for family skiing. The length of the ski slope is 350 meters. During the main winter season, evening skiing is also in operation. Here too, visitors can make use of a ski school, as well as a children's playground with its own ski lift.

The Nové Hutě area offers an even slightly longer ski slope. It measures over 1,000 meters and, together with another short ski slope, is again suitable rather for families with children or beginner skiers.

Access

A well-maintained road leads to the lookout tower from the village of Stachy (accessible from road number 4). It is recommended to park at the paid car park with sufficient capacity, which is located in the Churáňov ski resort near Hotel Churáňov. From there, it is an easy ascent along a forest path approximately one kilometre long, following the yellow tourist marker, which leads slightly uphill. The nearest bus stop, Stachy, is less than five kilometres away.

What is worth exploring

Nearby is the extensive CHKO Šumava with the dominant Boubínský prales and Boubín with its lookout tower. Less than twenty kilometres to the south lies Jezero Laka and hrad Kašperk. It is also worth visiting the Muzeum Šumavy in Kašperské Hory and Rozhledna Javorník.
