Plumlovská přehrada is an extensive water body on the border of the Drahanská vrchovina and Haná. It lies on the Hloučela River about 3 kilometres from Prostějov. It ranks among our oldest reservoirs and covers an area of 65 hectares. Its construction began as early as 1913 and initially did not meet with great enthusiasm among the population. Originally, it was supposed to be completed within five years, but World War I interrupted the plans. The complete finishing of the Plumlov dam thus took place only in 1932.

The main reason for construction was primarily flood protection and the support of the flow of the Hloučela River. However, a flood came sooner, and so in 1920, a large amount of water from persistent rain caused such damage at the dam that the final construction cost increased up to twelvefold.

Now, Plumlovská přehrada serves mainly tourists and athletes. Grassy beaches and refreshments are available, but for anyone who is not entertained by merely lying by the water, the offer of one of the rental shops can be utilized to cross the surface criss-cross on a paddle boat or a small boat. The nearest bus stop, Kurovice, is approximately 1 km away on foot. The nearest railway station, Hulín (line 330), is about 5 km away. Access to the quarry viewpoint is year-round and unrestricted, although entry into the quarry itself is limited for safety reasons.

Svah Zlín is situated directly in the town's built-up area, roughly 100 metres behind the Dům umění in the Barabáš locality. Access by car is possible via local roads from náměstí T. G. Masaryka towards the area. Parking is provided in the immediate vicinity. Public transport is convenient: the area is accessible by public transport directly from Zlín, and there are connections from the town centre, including a school ski bus; the distance from the Zlín railway station is approximately 1 km.

Hrad Starý Jičín, an extensive ruin on a hill near Nový Jičín, ranks among the oldest monuments in Moravia. It was founded at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century, with the first written mention dating back to 1240, likely by the Hückeswagen family. It originally served as a solid provincial castle for the protection of a trade route, the so-called Jantarová stezka, and due to its strategic location and wide view, it primarily fulfilled a military role. Its significance began to decline after the Thirty Years' War, when it gradually fell into disrepair. In 1996, the castle tower was reconstructed by the municipality, and it is now accessible as an observation tower with a beautiful view of the wide surroundings, for example of the town of Nový Jičín. A stylish restaurant is located on the ground floor of the tower, and a period exhibition of armour and documents about the castle is installed on the upper floors.

Access

The castle is located in the village of Starý Jičín in the Moravskoslezský kraj region. By car, you can reach it from the D1 motorway (exit 311) towards Nový Jičín, from where you continue along local roads. The tour route begins below the castle. For bus transport, the nearest stop is Starý Jičín, where regional connections stop. From the stop, it is necessary to count on a walk uphill to the castle. Parking is possible at designated car parks below the castle.

What is worth knowing

In the vicinity of the castle is the historical town of Nový Jičín, which has been declared an urban monument reservation. Visitors may visit the Žerotínský zámek with the exhibitions of the Muzeum Novojičínska, or take a walk around the square with its historical houses and arcades. For hiking, the Podbeskydí nature park or a trip to the nearby mountain Svinec with an observation tower is ideal.

Family skiing in the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains

Skipark Hraběšice is a cosy family ski centre situated in the picturesque foothills of the Jeseníky mountains, just 7 kilometres west of the town of Šumperk. The resort is ideal for families with children and skiers who prefer moderately challenging and well-maintained slopes. Thanks to its location on sunny southern slopes, at an altitude of 520 to 660 metres above sea level, it is able to ensure excellent skiing conditions throughout the entire winter season. The main downhill slope of medium difficulty is covered by artificial snow and groomed daily to offer skiers the best experience.

The total length of the downhill tracks is roughly 800 metres, divided into tracks of 500, 600, and 200 metres in length. In the lower part of the resort, there is plenty of space for a ski school and beginners. The resort also offers evening skiing, which is available on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The facilities include a cosy buffet with indoor and outdoor seating and toilets for skiers. A ski school for children and adults is also available, along with a ski and snowboard equipment rental service.

How to get there

Skipark Hraběšice is located in the village of the same name, Hraběšice, which is about 7 kilometres from Šumperk, the gateway to the Jeseníky mountains. When passing through Šumperk on the main road number 11, it is necessary to turn towards Hraběšice, which is properly marked with a road sign. The resort is easily accessible, and a maintained, large-capacity car park is located directly by the ski lift, which is free of charge for visitors.

The surroundings of Hraběšice offer rich opportunities for winter hiking and exploring the cultural and natural monuments of the Jeseníky mountains. Visitors may explore the ruins of Hrad Rabštejn near the village of Oskava, which is a popular tourist destination. Construction of the dam began in June 1977 and was completed in 1985. Two years later, it was put into permanent operation. During the filling of the dam, several predominantly agricultural homesteads were flooded. The main task of the Vodní nádrž Karolinka is to ensure a supply of drinking water for the inhabitants of the Vsetín, Klobouky, Valašsko, and Zlín regions, as well as to regulate the water flow of the river and protect the surroundings from potential floods. During warm and dry months, on the other hand, it serves to maintain at least the minimum flow.

The length of the Karolinka dam wall is 391.5 metres, its width is 5 metres, and its height above the riverbed is 35.5 metres. The water surface area is just under 51 hectares. In 1995, two turbine sets were installed at the bottom outlet closures, allowing for water extraction from three different depth levels in the reservoir, which enabled the construction of a small hydroelectric power plant.

In terms of water quality, the Vodní nádrž Karolinka is among the highest-quality reservoirs in the Morava river basin. This is mainly due to the purity of the Velká Stanovnice river, which rises directly on the slopes of the Javorníky. In the reservoir, the water neither overheats nor becomes polluted from the surroundings, as there are almost no villages or industrial or agricultural enterprises in its immediate vicinity. With its clear surface, it attracts people primarily in the summer for swimming and water sports. However, this is strictly prohibited due to the purpose of the dam.

Construction of the Horní Bečva dam began as early as 1933, but it was not completed and put into operation until 1947. As is often the case with dams, the original intention was to prevent destructive floods in the Bečva river basin. Several similarly small reservoirs were planned for the area, but only the Bystřička dam was realised alongside Horní Bečva. An interesting fact is that a condition for the construction of the reservoir was the non-interruption of road traffic leading through the valley; therefore, the road first had to be diverted from the valley to the right slope of the future reservoir. The last reconstruction took place between 2005 and 2006, when Horní Bečva was drained.

When heading to the Horní Bečva waterworks, visitors should expect grassy beaches and a gradual sandy entry into the water. The maximum depth in the reservoir is around 7 metres, and the dam measures only 250 metres. If you are expecting crystal-clear water, you may be disappointed.
