Together with the German Národní park Bavorský les, it forms the largest continuously forested area in Central Europe. Thanks to this, it is also referred to as the "green heart of Europe." It was declared a national park on 20 March 1991; a year earlier, the territory was inscribed on the UNESCO list as the Šumava biosphere reserve.

Šumavský národní park is part of the Chráněná krajinná oblast Šumava. Within the territory of the national park, there are several dozen nature reserves and smaller protected areas. The main reason for declaring the national park was, in particular, the protection of biological communities – spruce forests, primeval forest stands, peat bogs, or corrie lakes. One may also find several endangered animal species here, such as the Eurasian lynx, the western capercaillie, or the Eurasian elk. There are also some insect species that cannot be seen anywhere else but in the local peat bogs.

Národní park Šumava itself can be divided into several separate areas: Šumavské pláně, Železnorudská hornatina, Boubínská hornatina, Želnavská hornatina, and Trojmezenská hornatina with the Vltavská brázda. In terms of altitude, it extends from 600 to 1,378 metres above sea level. The highest point is the mountain Plechý.

According to the method of protection, the park is divided into 3 zones: strict nature, managed nature, and peripheral. Included in the strict nature zone are the most valuable primeval forests and wetlands, which are protected from human influence. In the managed nature zone, one finds the largest part of the forest ecosystems, and in the peripheral zone, there are already places that people may use for tourism, recreation, or, for example, agriculture. Even in the peripheral zone, however, there are certain rules that protect nature from the devastating influence of certain activities.

Nevertheless, Národní park Šumava still has many "enemies." The greatest natural enemy has long been the bark beetle, which is causing significant calamities not only in the Šumava region but throughout our entire republic. Humans also have a negative impact on the local nature. This primarily involves timber harvesting that is not always justified, the construction of tourist centres, or the activities of canoeists on the upper reaches of the Vltava. For this reason, nature conservationists and ecologists are very active here, and one can regularly see them in television reports. The activities within the national park are also overseen by the Správa Národního parku Šumava.

From a hydrological perspective, Šumavský národní park is a significant location. One can find natural watercourses, glacial lakes, and man-made structures here. The territory belongs mainly to the North Sea watershed, with a smaller part belonging to the Black Sea. The Vydra river as well as the longest Czech river, the Vltava, begin their journey here. It rises below Černá hora as the Černý potok and gradually expands with other streams. Near Volary, it is already the true Vltava.

There are three glacial lakes here, namely Plešné jezero, Prášilské jezero, and jezero Laka. On the eastern edge of Národní park Šumava lies the Lipenská přehrada, which was built between 1950 and 1960 as the first stage of the Vltava cascade near Lipno nad Vltavou. The largest water area in the Česká republika is the Lipno reservoir, nicknamed the Czech sea. Visitors can find it in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemian Region), with the majority of the reservoir also lying within the Chráněná krajinná oblast Šumava (Šumava Protected Landscape Area). The surface area of 48.7 km² offers swimming and the opportunity to enjoy many water sports. The Lipno reservoir, built on the Vltava River in the second half of the 20th century, is a sought-after tourist location. Because it ceased to be a source of drinking water, boats with combustion engines up to 10 kW have been permitted here since 2015. Several ports can therefore be found here, with Marina Lipno port being among the highest quality and most modern, offering first-class facilities and the widest range of services. The standard length of a moored vessel is up to 10 m, with a width of 2.5 m and a draught of up to 240 cm. Larger boats are moored alongside the ends of the piers. Chemical toilet disposal points and the option to top up water tanks can be found at the technical station. Connection to 220 V electrical outlets is available directly on the floating piers. Access to individual piers is lockable, and a crane is provided for launching and hauling out boats. Vessels can also remain moored during the winter, and nighttime navigation using beacons as well as port lighting are provided. A Wi-Fi network is also available, and for convenience, toilets and showers are open 24 hours a day. Weather forecast announcements are provided by the harbour master's office. For those wishing to relax, the observation terrace with catering services is available to use. The operating hours of the port generally run from May to the end of October, and wheelchair-accessible entry is ensured.

The port is connected to an 11.5 km long cycling and inline skating trail. A system of five interconnected cycling routes has also been established. The Římov reservoir was built on the Malše River, south of České Budějovice, near the village of Římov, and it also extends into the cadastral areas of the villages of Velešín and Svatý Jan nad Malší. It was constructed between 1971 and 1978 as a drinking water reservoir for České Budějovice and the surrounding area. The Římov dam is inaccessible to swimmers and anglers. In terms of the reservoir's volume and the volume of water withdrawn, it is currently the largest water supply reservoir in South Bohemia.

Preparation of the project began in the late 1960s, when a decision was made regarding the location of the dam near Římov and the water treatment plant near the village of Plav. Actual construction commenced in January 1974. The dam embankment was completed by the end of 1976. Filling of the reservoir began in June 1978.

The total volume of the reservoir reaches almost 34 million m3, and the flooded area covers 210 hectares. The embankment dam is 290 m long and 47.5 m high. A road and a red tourist trail run along the dam between Římov and Svatý Jan nad Malší. The reinforced concrete tower structure is the location of the shaft for the small bottom outlet, as well as two water intake shafts and two additional bottom outlets. The upper machine room at the top is accessible via a steel footbridge from the dam crest. A small hydroelectric power plant is located in the lower machine room.

As the main source of drinking water for South Bohemia, the Římov reservoir is protected by conservation zones; the first zone is forested, while in the second and third zones, any activity is governed by management principles. Wastewater treatment plants exist in larger villages within the reservoir basin.

If visitors wish to view the dam from various angles, they can walk along the yellow trail from Římov to Velešín on the western bank, and a blue tourist trail winds from Římov to Kaplice on the eastern bank. In addition to the dam, visitors can view the Jesuit Baroque château in Římov, while the castle ruins can be seen in Velešín. After many transformations, today the monastery complex serves as a library, museum, information center, café, and cultural center, complemented by the experiential tour called “six senses.” In 2020, the beautiful Garden of Flowers was added – rich in plants supporting insects and small birds.

We have a mention of the castle in Strakonice from 1243, when there is a record stating that its owner, Bavor I, donated half of his castle to the Knights Hospitaller. It is therefore more than likely that the castle is even somewhat older. The peculiarity of this castle is that it was originally strictly separated into a secular and a Hospitaller part, and only in 1402 did the Hospitaller knights become the sole owners. Currently, the castle has as many as three owners, namely the town of Strakonice, the South Bohemian Region, and the religious buildings are owned by the Roman Catholic Church.

As is often the case with many castles, the Strakonice castle was also ravaged during the Thirty Years' War, subsequently struck by fire, gradually fell into disrepair, and thus underwent several smaller and larger reconstructions over the centuries. The last, most extensive reconstruction in 2005 revealed archaeological finds from the 14th and 15th centuries and a 12th-century burial site was also partially uncovered. Archaeological finds can be seen today as part of the exhibition of the Muzeum středního Pootaví, which is located directly within the castle grounds.

The castle complex includes as many as three castle courtyards, the Church of St. Procopius, which today belongs to the Catholic Church, and the former prior's residence, which now houses a primary art school. If a grand wedding day awaits you, you have the opportunity to book a ceremony at the castle, where a ceremonial hall is designated for weddings. In addition to it, the chapter hall, the Bavarian Palace, or the former manorial brewery can also be seen.

The most interesting attraction at the castle is, however, undoubtedly the Rumpál Tower. Why a treadwheel (rumpál)? Well, convicts who were tortured and imprisoned in this tower were apparently lowered into the starvation dungeon precisely by a treadwheel or a similar device. However, the tower originally served for defense. From the outside, you can see gargoyles in the shape of various monsters and non-existent beasts, inside 96 steps await you, and at the top of the tower you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of all of Strakonice and also the foothills of the Šumava mountains.

You will experience a second, equally interesting tour in the black kitchen. It dates back approximately to the 16th century and in it you can see what the castle kitchen with a chimney, drying room, and bread oven presumably looked like one to two centuries later. At that time, it was a modern part of the castle. Of course, cooking no longer takes place in it today, but even so, you can try some of the specialties of the local "castle kitchen". Since we are in the South Bohemian Region, a region of ponds, fish must certainly not be missing on the menu, but you can also enjoy partridges, pheasants, or hares. In short, everything that the inhabitants of the castle could have had on their plates more than half a millennium ago. If you fancied a sweet treat, you certainly will not resist genuine parish-feast cakes, doughnuts, or strudels.

Since the Muzeum středního Pootaví, the Šmidingerova knihovna Strakonice, and the Městské kulturní středisko Strakonice currently have their headquarters at the Strakonice Castle in addition to the primary art school, throughout the year you can visit various exhibitions,vernissages, lectures, or creative workshops not only for children here according to the current program.

If you are traveling to Strakonice with children, there is a diverse range of activities for them as well. Directly in the castle moat is the castle safari, which is open year-round, and children can stroke donkeys, miniature goats, pigs, or wild ducks here. If you would like to feed the animals, an automatic machine is available where you can purchase suitable feed. Another leisure activity suitable for children is called Strakonická šifra, during which 14 stops with riddles await you. If you solve them, you can then exchange the correct solution at the city information center for a small treasure as a reward for your efforts. If you like cycling, take a ride along the Otava and as part of the Otavská plavba dětem event you can collect stamps along the way. Moreover, the Podskalí educational trail runs along the Otava riverbed, which even preschool children can manage on foot because it is only 3 km long.

Lipenská přehrada or the Lipno reservoir is the largest artificial lake in the Czech Republic, situated within the territory of the Národní park Šumava. For adrenaline enthusiasts, Active Park Lipno has prepared the Bobová dráha Lipno nad Vltavou. This ranks among the world's best, primarily due to its length of 1 kilometre. Throughout its entire route, it is highly varied, featuring 21 turns, 2 tunnels, and various terrain breaks. Speed can be regulated independently using a lever. Furthermore, a timing system measures the actual speed achieved. Visitors are thus able to compare their times with other members of their party.

An alpine coaster is also intertwined with the bobsleigh track. This represents a unique combination that offers a fabulous adrenaline experience. The bobsleigh track is currently the safest bobsleigh track manufactured in the world. Its features include safety belts and automatic brakes.

The adrenaline ride can then be concluded at the Bikepark. Entertainment is provided by banked turns, terrain waves, rollers, rock gardens, and wooden footbridges. Visitors will find a milder 1.8-kilometre route or may ride a more difficult route measuring 1.2 kilometres. Bicycles can be conveniently transported using a four-seater cable car. Parking by the Bikepark is free of charge. A special course with an experienced instructor can also be booked.

On the territory of the Národní park Šumava, several interesting lakes can be found. One of them is Plešné jezero, which was formerly also called Plekenštejnské jezero or was known by its German designation Plöckensteinsee. This glacial lake lies in the cadastral area of the municipality of Nová Pec, in the Prachatice District. Its maximum depth is 18.3 m and the volume of retained water is around 617,000 m³. It is located at an altitude of 1,090 m a. s. l.

The lake received its naming after Mount Plechý, which is the highest mountain of the Czech part of the Šumava. Water drains from the lake through Jezerní potok and flows into the Vltava River near the Lipno Dam. The lake originated from one of the eleven valley glaciers that were located in the Šumava during the Quaternary period. The edges of Plešné jezero are bordered by a high moraine dam, and at the foot of the mountain, they are carved into the exposed walls of the glacial cirque. The height of the lake wall is up to 260 m.

According to historical records, the first person to explore Plešné jezero was the Rožmberk regent Jakub Krčín z Jelčan. The lake was later used to supply water to the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál. Josef Rosenauer, who was the builder of the canal, thoroughly sealed the lake's moraine and placed discharge sluice gates into the dam. Thanks to this, it was possible to regulate the water in the canal. A small meteorological station is also located on the dam, which investigates and records phenomena, especially precipitation and winds, which have an effect on fluctuations in the lake's water level.

In 1999, the Správa Národního parku Šumava carried out a repair of the dam. Thanks to this, the lake became more accessible and stable. And gradually, a larger number of tourists began to come here as well. At the top of the northwest wall stands the Stifterův památník, which commemorates the well-known Šumava poet Adalbert Stifter. From the platform in front of the monument, there is a magnificent view of the surface of Plešné jezero. The Zážitková naučná stezka "Duch pralesa" leads from this monument back to the lake. And there is one more memorial plaque here. It is dedicated to Jan Nepomuk ze Schwarzenberku, who merited the construction of the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál.

And how do visitors get to Plešné jezero? They can take it by bike, for example. Cycle route No. 1029 from the municipality of Stožec leads visitors all the way to the lake after 12 kilometres. The path also leads partially along the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál, and there is truly much to admire. The magnificent nature of the national park will surely captivate visitors. The last part of the route is somewhat more demanding, but the destination is then well worth it. On the return journey, visitors can disconnect from the route at the navigational canal onto cycle route No. 1023 and get back to Stožec via a circuit through the settlement of Jelení.

In addition to Plešné jezero, other lakes are also located in the Šumava, such as Černé jezero, which is the largest natural lake in the Czech Republic, or Čertovo jezero. Both lie in the vicinity of Železná Ruda, which is a significant sports and tourist center.

Already during the last century, Plešné jezero was a popular destination for tourists who visited the Šumava nature. Therefore, a tourist base Lucemburská chata was built near the lake in 1911. It became the property of the Klub českých turistů, but in 1948 it was seized by the Pohraniční stráž and adapted for the use of the border guard company. It left the building in 1989, and the cottage was demolished.

Our successful cross-country skier Kateřina Neumannová also trained on the marked trails, of which there are over 50 kilometers and which connect to other trails within the entire Šumava. Various sporting events regularly take place at the local cross-country stadium.

Of course, downhill skiing is also represented in Lyžařský areál Zadov. The resort is divided into several smaller areas. Lyžařský areál Kobyla offers a 4-chair lift and 2 smaller ski lifts. It is possible to ski on approximately 3 kilometers of ski slopes. Visitors can frolic in the snowpark, which, like the ski slope, is artificially snowed and illuminated. Original ski jumps can also be found here, though they are already out of operation. A ski and snowboard school with a ski equipment rental and service shop is also not lacking.

The second Lyžařský areál U Horejšů is rather suitable for family skiing. The length of the ski slope is 350 meters. During the main winter season, evening skiing is also in operation. Here too, visitors can make use of a ski school, as well as a children's playground with its own ski lift.

The Nové Hutě area offers an even slightly longer ski slope. It measures over 1,000 meters and, together with another short ski slope, is again suitable rather for families with children or beginner skiers.

Throughout the entire winter season, visitors can use shuttle transport provided by the local ski bus to move around Lyžařský areál Zadov. Parking is provided for motorists. And when visitors get hungry, they can make use of the fast food offerings. Toilets are also a matter of course.

Access

A well-maintained road leads to the lookout tower from the village of Stachy (accessible from road number 4). It is recommended to park at the paid car park with sufficient capacity, which is located in the Churáňov ski resort near Hotel Churáňov. From there, it is an easy ascent along a forest path approximately one kilometre long, following the yellow tourist marker, which leads slightly uphill. The nearest bus stop, Stachy, is less than five kilometres away.

What is worth exploring

Nearby is the extensive CHKO Šumava with the dominant Boubínský prales and Boubín with its lookout tower. Less than twenty kilometres to the south lies Jezero Laka and hrad Kašperk. It is also worth visiting the Muzeum Šumavy in Kašperské Hory and Rozhledna Javorník.

Discover the Magic of Horažďovice and Šumava

There is no need to travel far across borders, because an interesting and relaxing holiday full of water and fun can be fully enjoyed even in western Bohemia.

The Orlík Dam was constructed between 1954 and 1961 in the territory of the Písek and Příbram districts, resulting in the flooding of up to 10 municipalities. Its length reaches 68 kilometres, and it forms a part of the Vltava Cascade. It holds the Czech primary position in terms of water volume and is the second-largest dam in the Czech Republic by surface area. At the same time, however, it ranks among the thinnest dams in the world.

The name was derived from the Orlík Castle, which towers on a rock above the reservoir. During the construction of the dam, aside from the aforementioned flooding of certain municipalities, it was also necessary to relocate an entire church. Concurrently, the Orlík Hydroelectric Power Station was built, which was even awarded at the EXPO 58 exhibition in Brussels. The construction of the entire dam was very demanding and therefore claimed several victims among the workers.

After all, the Orlík Dam was marked by sad and tragic events later on as well. Based on investigations, several bodies of Czech businessmen who were supposed to fall into oblivion beneath the water surface were recovered from the reservoir between 1991 and 1993. Even before that, another three victims were found.

However, the Orlík Reservoir also has its better sides. Several campsites with beaches lie along its shores and are frequently used by holidaymakers for swimming or windsurfing. Refreshment stalls and boat rental shops are also available. Visitors may thus choose, for example, Popelíky, Trhovky, Lavičky, Radava, or Charvátská pláň, which is sought after mainly by naturists.

From the harbour in Orlík nad Vltavou, visitors can also reach the nearby Zvíkov Castle via boat transport and thus plan a wonderful trip combining swimming and sightseeing. Orlík is a significant work and inherently belongs to the list of attractive places suitable for recreation. Visitors are simply invited to find suitable accommodation near the Orlík Dam and the holiday may begin.

Areál Monínec is a year-round resort located less than 4 kilometres from the town of Sedlec-Prčice, in the Příbram district, in the Středočeský kraj region. It is an ideal destination for families with children, teambuilding events, or for spending an active holiday.

During the summer season, Areál Monínec offers endless possibilities for hikers and cycling enthusiasts. Visitors need only choose a route that suits their preferences and set off on foot or by bike to encounter new adventures. In the lower part of the resort, there is a ski conveyor belt which, at 90 metres in length, is the longest in the Czech Republic. It is part of a ski school where children can learn the proper foundations of skiing skills.

At Areál Monínec, visitors will also find snowtubing and a freestyle fun park. The latter features its own ski lift and artificial lighting, allowing for evening operations. Evening skiing can also be enjoyed on the aforementioned red slopes.

As a proper ski resort, Areál Monínec also offers a free car park, refreshments, and ski equipment rental and service. It is the right place to spend an active day.

Zámek Smilkov, situated in the Středočeský kraj region near Benešov, has its historical roots in a 15th-century Gothic fortress. The fortress was rebuilt into a Renaissance château in the 16th century by the Smilkovští ze Smilkova family. The château is known for its elegant Renaissance details and an extensive historical park. Following an extensive renovation in the 21st century, the château serves as a luxurious family residence and is occasionally opened to the public for cultural events. Access

Zámek Smilkov is located in the village of Smilkov, at the address Smilkov 1. By car, access is available from the D1 motorway (exit 66) or from the II/125 road. Parking is possible at a free car park near the village. Bus transport has its nearest stop at Smilkov, obec, which is within walking distance. The nearest railway station, Vlašim (line 222), is about 10 km away, from where it is necessary to use a bus connection. Interior tours are limited.

What is worth knowing

In the vicinity of Smilkov, visitors may visit the historical town of Benešov with Zámek Konopiště, the well-known residence of Franz Ferdinand d'Este. Visitors may also visit Hrad Český Šternberk, a majestic Gothic castle above the Sázava river. Also of interest is Rozhledna Blaník, which offers a view of the Středočeská pahorkatina and the surrounding area.

The Land of Stonecutters and Rock Giants

Geopark Vysočina, which stretches across the area of Javořická vrchovina in the Kraj Vysočina region, is one of the national geoparks of the Czech Republic. This territory with an area of approximately 180 km² is located north and west of the town of Telč and extends up to the highest point of Českomoravská vrchovina, the peak of Javořice (837 m a. s. l.). The geopark was proclaimed with the aim of presenting the unique geological heritage of the region, which is inextricably linked with a rich stonecutting tradition.

The rocks of the geopark tell a story about the massive Hercynian orogeny from 340 million years ago (Carboniferous), when extensive mountain ranges were formed here. Today's landscape is formed primarily by a deep-seated intrusive rock, granite of the Moldanubian pluton, which has been gradually exposed by erosion. Notable geomorphological features that were created by frost weathering during the ice age, such as rock towers, frost-riven cliffs, and extensive stone seas, are also part of the geopark.

How to Get There

Starting points for exploring the geopark are notably the historical town of Telč (inscribed on the UNESCO list) or the market town of Mrákotín. Telč is accessible by both train and bus and offers accommodation and parking options. It is also possible to arrive in Mrákotín, which is the centre of the stonecutting tradition, by bus or car. A network of marked tourist trails leads into the geopark from these places.

The heart and symbol of Geopark Vysočina is the granite rock formation Míchova skála near the village of Řásná, which offers magnificent views of Javořická vrchovina. Significant localities also include the Štamberk nature reserve and the stone sea with a boulder slope and the ruins of Štamberk Castle. In Mrákotín, visitors can visit the Museum of Stonecutting and Underground, which documents the extraction and processing of Mrákotín granite, known throughout the republic (for example, the monolith at Prague Castle comes precisely from Mrákotín). Right in Telč, visitors can explore the Telč Underground and the historical centre. The geopark is crisscrossed by educational trails (for example, the "Geologická stezka") and cycle routes that lead visitors to abandoned flooded quarries, ponds, and peat bogs.
