How to get there

The Ski areál Kozinec is located in the Jilemnice – Hrabačov district, near the road towards Harrachov. On the approach route from Jilemnice, one must turn left after the railway tracks. A free car park is available for visitors directly at the lower lift station. The nearest railway station is Jilemnice, located approximately 1.5 km away, from where it is possible to continue on foot or via local transport.

What you can discover in the surroundings

Jilemnice and its surroundings in the western Krkonoše offer rich opportunities for year-round tourism. Directly in the town of Jilemnice, one can find the Krkonošské muzeum located in the historical chateau, where, among other things, the unique Metelkův mechanický betlém is on display. Another tourist attraction is the collection of folk architecture known as Zvědavá ulička. In the vicinity of the resort, there is a great opportunity to set out on a hike to the Žalý peak, where the rozhledna Žalý stands, offering panoramic views of the Krkonoše. It is located among forests right in the center of the Krkonošský národní park. Skiareál Svatý Petr is one of the five ski resorts belonging to the Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn complex. It is situated in the heart of the Krkonoše mountains in Špindlerův Mlýn at an altitude of 741 to 1,198 metres above sea level. Its black slope meets international standards, which is why the most important ski races are held here. Those wishing to compare themselves with professional Czech skiers may test their skills on a measured course on one of the slopes.

When searching for the best place to go skiing, Skiareál Svatý Petr will undoubtedly be a top choice, as it is the most popular ski resort in the Czech Republic. Its quality is evidenced not only by the hosting of several Alpine Skiing World Cup events but also by the receipt of several prestigious international quality awards. Five slopes are available to visitors. Beginners should head to the blue slope, which is 2.7 km long with an elevation gain of 400 metres. The red FIS slope has the same elevation gain but over a shorter distance, while only experienced skiers who feel confident on a course worthy of world champions should attempt the black FIS World Cup slope. All trails are equipped with artificial snowmaking, so there is no need to worry about snow conditions. A two-seater or a six-seater heated chairlift, with a transport capacity of up to 3,000 people per hour, will take visitors to the start of the slopes.

As is standard practice for large ski complexes, a ski pass purchased for Skiareál Svatý Petr is valid on all slopes within the Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn complex. One of the smaller ski resorts, Horní Mísečky, can be found on the slopes of Medvědín, at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level. It lies to the north of Vítkovice and to the west of Špindlerův Mlýn. It is the youngest ski resort included in the Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn complex. Alongside it, the complex also includes Skiareál Svatý Petr, Skiareál Medvědín, and the Hromovka Ski resort. The resort is situated in the magnificent countryside of the Krkonoše národní park.

The Ski areál Horní Mísečky is particularly suitable for families with children. The local slope is of a gentle gradient while also being sufficiently wide and clear, ensuring children remain within sight at all times. However, children are not the only ones taking their first skiing steps here. Adults who have not had the chance to learn to ski until now or wish to refine their technique also gladly make use of Horní Mísečky.

A comfortable quad chairlift transports visitors to the start of the slope. There are also three smaller lifts located in the lower section of the slope. Furthermore, additional areas are available where visitors can enjoy plenty of fun, such as the Funtrack situated in the upper part of the resort. It consists of various bumps, turns, waves, and other intricate features designed to make skiing even more entertaining.

The Burton snowpark, located on the slope most exposed to the sun's rays, must not be overlooked either. Various obstacles await visitors here as well, guaranteeing a perfect day full of fun and adrenaline on the slope. Should that not feel sufficient, visitors are encouraged to continue boldly during night skiing.

And when hunger strikes during skiing, there is no need to despair. Gone are the days when visitors had to take a thermos of tea and a schnitzel sandwich from home for a skiing trip. Refreshments are prepared for visitors in the middle section of the slope, ensuring no one remains hungry or thirsty. Artificial snowmaking is available throughout the entire Ski areál Horní Mísečky, ensuring skiing is guaranteed even during a lack of snow. Snowmaking equipment is also distributed along the local cross-country skiing area. Here, maintained cross-country loops ranging from 1 to 10 kilometres in length are located, or visitors can set off on a cross-country trail towards Benecko, Rokytnice nad Jizerou, Harrachov, or Labská bouda.

In addition to the aforementioned ski resorts belonging to Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn, smaller slopes can also be found in the surrounding area, such as Skiareál Vurmovka or Lyžařský areál Janova Hora, along with plenty of other places well worth visiting when embarking on a trip to the Krkonoše. Mohyla Hanče a Vrbaty above Horní Mísečky possesses a special atmosphere. It commemorates the tragic event of 1913 when, during a skiing race, adverse weather conditions caused the deaths of the competitor Bohumil Hanč and his friend Václav Vrbata, who had set out to help him.

Ideal for families and beginners

Ski areál Svoboda nad Úpou is the smallest and most tranquil centre within the SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC complex. It is situated in the picturesque town of Svoboda nad Úpou in the Krkonoše Mountains, at an altitude ranging from 530 to 600 metres above sea level. Thanks to its gentle slopes, the resort is specifically designed for families with children and beginner skiers who are seeking a safe environment for their first skiing attempts.

The centre offers three ski slopes with a total length of approximately 1.1 kilometres. There are three blue (easy) slopes available: Duncan 1 (350 metres), Duncan 2 (350 metres) and the U lesa slope (350 metres). Transport for skiers is provided by three Poma-type ski lifts with a total capacity of approximately 2,000 persons per hour. The lifts are named Duncan (350 metres), U lesa 1 (250 metres) and U lesa 2 (350 metres). All slopes are equipped with an artificial snow-making system and are regularly groomed. On selected days, usually from Thursday to Saturday during the main season, evening skiing is also available on the Duncan 1 and Duncan 2 slopes. The resort also includes a children's ski school and an equipment rental shop.

How to get there

Ski areál Svoboda nad Úpou is located directly in the town of Svoboda nad Úpou, which lies on the main E67 road between Trutnov and Pec pod Sněžkou. A free car park with sufficient capacity is available to visitors directly at the resort. It is also possible to reach the town by public transport. The nearest bus stop is Svoboda nad Úpou, náměstí, from where it is a short walk to the resort. Svoboda nad Úpou also has a railway station on the Trutnov – Svoboda nad Úpou line, from where it is also possible to continue on foot. Within the SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC, connections between the resorts are provided by ski buses during the main season, which stop in the town.

What you can discover in the surroundings

Svoboda nad Úpou serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the eastern Krkonoše Mountains. Tourists may ascend to the landmark of the Krkonoše, Sněžka (1,603 m a.s.l.), to which marked tourist trails lead, or take a cable car from nearby Pec pod Sněžkou. In the neighbouring Janské Lázně, there is the Stezka korunami stromů Krkonoše and a cabin cable car to Černá hora. Hiking trails will also lead you to the Modré kameny lookout, offering views of the Krkonoše. For history lovers, the town offers the Pohádkové Krkonoše – an exhibition of Krkonoše fairy-tale characters. Near Svoboda nad Úpou, visitors can also discover the lesser-known natural phenomenon of Svobodský kras, which includes, for example, the Medvědí jeskyně.

Lesní hrádek Aichelburg is a romantic neo-Gothic structure that towers high above the Úpa River on the wooded slope of Světlá hora, near the village of Temný Důl in the Krkonoše Mountains. It is not a medieval seat, but rather a unique memorial commissioned by the forestry staff of the Maršov estate in memory of Count Berthold Aichelburg, a renowned manager and patron of the eastern Krkonoše Mountains. Although it originally fell into disrepair, it was reconstructed by a civic association.

Today, a restored castle tower and a wooden guardhouse stand upon the rock. The small castle offers a beautiful view of the Rýchorský hřeben ridge and parts of the eastern Krkonoše Mountains, although it is partially obscured by the surrounding forests. The site is managed by the Veselý výlet information centre in Horní Maršov, where visitors can borrow a key to tour the interior of the tower.

Access

Visitors arriving by car will reach the village of Horní Maršov (approximately 15 km from Trutnov), where parking is available in designated car parks. Bus transport provides direct access to Horní Maršov. By train, the nearest station is Svoboda nad Úpou, from which it is approximately 7 km to Horní Maršov. A marked tourist trail leads from Horní Maršov to the small castle, extending about 3 km uphill. The starting point can be the Veselý výlet information centre in Horní Maršov.

What Is Worth Discovering

The surrounding area is rich in hiking opportunities in the Krkonoše Mountains. A marked trail named Aichelburg leads from Lesní hrádek all the way to Pec pod Sněžkou, spanning about 8 km, with informational stops detailing local landmarks. From nearby Horní Maršov, visitors can set out towards the Rýchorský prales primeval forest or onto the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains. Located not far away is the popular mountain resort of Pec pod Sněžkou, from which a cable car takes visitors up to the summit of Sněžka.

The highest mountain in the Czech Republic is Sněžka, which rises to an altitude of 1,603 metres above sea level. It is located in the Krkonoše mountains, and the state border with Poland runs across its summit. Visitors may comfortably reach the top via a modern cable car, which departs from Pec pod Sněžkou or from the intermediate station at Růžová hora.

Apart from the cable car station, there are other structures on the summit of Sněžka. Examples include the Polská bouda mountain hut, which houses a meteorological station, or the Kaple sv. Vavřince (Chapel of St. Lawrence), which is the oldest building in this area. It was consecrated as early as 1681. In those days, religious services were held on Sněžka up to five times a year and were attended by a multitude of pilgrims from the surrounding area. Over the following years, the chapel burned down several times. It was subsequently re-consecrated, the altar and murals were restored, and it now once again serves as a place for masses dedicated to mountain guides and rescuers, whose patron is indeed Saint Lawrence.

Another, and arguably the most well-known, building for the public is the Česká poštovna (Czech Post Office). This fully functional post office ensures the dispatch of postcards and provides other postal services. It also includes a refreshment stall and an observation deck, which offers a magnificent panoramic view of the vast surroundings. At the same time, it is the highest situated building in the country.

In addition to the aforementioned cable car, it is possible to reach Sněžka via several different hiking trails. Scaling the highest mountain is a very popular challenge, and it is therefore one of the most visited attractions in the Krkonoše mountains. The most frequently used route leads from Pec pod Sněžkou. Here, one still has the choice of whether to attempt the ascent on foot or to make use of the aforementioned cable car. The walking route partially follows the cable car line, leads over Růžová hora, and measures approximately 6.5 kilometres. The reward for the effort will be magnificent views and fresh mountain air.

The least demanding ascent can be started in Malá Úpa. The roughly 4-kilometre-long Cesta česko-polského přátelství (Czech-Polish Friendship Trail) will lead visitors along the red tourist marker over Obří hřeben to the summit. Conversely, the most challenging but visually most rewarding route starts again in Pec pod Sněžkou and leads through Obří důl and Obří sedlo. Its length is 7 kilometres, and during the summer season, visitors can also visit the Kovárna mine along the way, which commemorates the history of mining in the Krkonoše mountains.

A starting point can also be Špindlerův Mlýn. This blue trail leads through the Údolí Bílého Labe (White Elbe Valley). All routes can be combined with one another to make the most of the ascent to Sněžka. However, the Krkonoše are not just about Sněžka. These mountains are attractive to visitors throughout the entire year.

They truly offer something for everyone. Therefore, a holiday in the Krkonoše mountains appears to be a perfect plan that cannot disappoint. Visitors are invited to book comfortable accommodation in the vicinity of Sněžka or another Krkonoše attraction that appeals to them, and to enjoy their well-deserved days of rest with family or friends. The highest waterfall in the Czech Republic is Pančavský vodopád in the Krkonoše mountains. Its height is an impressive 148 metres. It is located on the Pančava stream, which is a right-bank tributary of the Labe river. Together with Labský vodopád, it forms a system of viewpoints in Labský důl. One of the most famous is Ambrožova vyhlídka, from which Labský důl, Kotel, and Kozí hřbety are spread out before visitors. This is not the only reason why Pančavský vodopád is a sought-after tourist location.

The waterfall reaches its greatest flow during the spring thaw in April and May. In these months, the large volume of water forms several separate branches. The waterfall itself has a cascading character, and its width varies depending on the season, ranging from 4 to 8 metres.

Access to Pančavský vodopád itself is restricted, as it is located in the first zone of the Krkonošský národní park. A marked tourist trail leads from Špindlerův Mlýn around the waterfalls. Those who take this path will certainly not regret it. In addition to wonderful views, many other attractions await. Just above the waterfall is a memorial plaque to Otokar Štětka, who was the head of the Horská záchranná služba Krkonoše for more than half a century.

Further along, visitors will also encounter the Mohyla Hanče a Vrbaty. This is a monument to the famous skier Bohumil Hanč, who died here during a race, and his friend Václav Vrbata, who tried to help him. The trail continues into the western Krkonoše and branches off in several directions. Retropark Sejfy – this forest swimming pool can be found near the village of Mladé Buky, about 1 km to the north. It is one of the few swimming pools in the Krkonoše mountains. The most important feature of the swimming pool is a 50-metre-long pool with a gradually sloping bottom. At the same time, there is space here for various sports activities and relaxation. Visitors may enjoy a pleasant environment thanks to the natural character of the swimming pool. Summer camps or school trips are regularly organised here.

Depending on who owned the swimming pool at the time, it alternately experienced better and worse times, until it was eventually closed. The swimming pool was reopened on 21 July 2002 after an expensive reconstruction of not only the pool but also the buildings and the complex. The year 2006 also brought a new multifunctional building, Rotunda. In 2009, the camping part of the complex was reconstructed.

Family-oriented ski area between the Krkonoše and Jizerské hory mountains

The ski resort is located in the village of Paseky nad Jizerou, on the border between the western Krkonoše and the Jizerské hory mountains. In the lowest parts, the caves remain flooded with water, thus forming the most extensive underground lakes in the Czech Republic.

In these areas, the natural decoration was damaged by the collapse of rock blocks.

Slowly moving forward along the path around Mechová zahrádka, one arrives at Křižovatka. Here, the tour of the Nové jeskyně circuit begins. Via the Souběžná and Pirátská corridors, one reaches the thematically lit Peklo cave. This is likely to be particularly enjoyed by children. Once visitors manage to get out of Peklo, two small Labutí jezírka can be seen to the side. Subsequently, passing the inaccessible areas known as Betlém, one reaches the Loupežnická cave. Right at the beginning of this circuit, the Prušácká přilba is sure to catch the eye. It is a large sinter block, including a part of a "curtain", which was formed by the gradual shifting of rock.

Subsequently, following the route of the explorers, one passes the Bludiště to reach the Překvapení cave. Visitors are sure to enjoy this area. The magnificent stalactite decoration and the number of stalactites, which form the Bozkovské varhany on the front wall, are complemented by the stalagmites Palec and Ukazovák. To see the large stalactite called Raketa, one must move on to the Listopadová cave. Subsequently, passing Sloní uši, Rokokové panenky, and Perníková chaloupka, one arrives at the starting point of the Staré jeskyně circuit.

And here, the highlight of the tour awaits, the largest underground lake in Bohemia, which is also the lowest point of the Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně. To these superlatives, the largest space discovered so far can be added the Jezerní dóm, behind which the Mládežnický dóm is located, representing the final section of the entire tour route.
