The deepest chasm of its kind in the Czech Republic and Central Europe, over 138.5 metres deep. This is the Macocha Abyss. Even the legend associated with the Macocha Abyss has a tragic undertone. Once, in the nearby village of Vilémovice, lived a young farmer named Hálek. When his wife fell ill and subsequently died, Hálek was left alone with his young son, Martínek. As often happens, Hálek eventually remarried, and before long, his wife gave birth to a son. Then, difficult times began for Martínek. His stepmother favoured her own child and turned against Martínek. Hálek tried to help his firstborn son in secret, but it was all to no avail.

One day, when Hálek travelled to town with his younger son, the stepmother took Martínek into the forest to pick strawberries. They reached an abyss with a small lake, which was said to be so deep that it had no bottom. The stepmother sent Martínek to the very edge of the abyss, claiming that the most beautiful strawberries were there. Martínek, afraid to disobey, leaned over the abyss; the stepmother then pushed him, and Martínek plummeted into the depths. The wicked woman ran away from the abyss, but on the way home, she began to realise what she had done and returned to the site. She knew that Hálek would never forgive her for this, and she could not live in peace anyway. Therefore, she covered her eyes and jumped down into the abyss.

When the farmer returned from town and could not find his wife and the boy at home, he set out to look for them. Neighbours told him that they had gone to pick strawberries. The farmer reached the abyss, and suddenly, a great storm broke out. He was about to run and hide, but suddenly he heard a child crying. He leaned over the edge of the abyss and saw his Martínek, who, as if by a miracle, had caught onto a bush growing on the slope of the abyss. He ran for a rope and pulled the boy up. Judging by a headscarf that had also caught on the bush, he realised what had happened to his wife. Ever since, the abyss has been called Macocha (Stepmother). And it is said that during a storm, you can hear a faint crying coming from the abyss. That, they say, is the unhappy stepmother moaning.

The first to penetrate the Macocha Abyss was the team of Karel Absolon through the Punkevní jeskyně from the Pustý žleb valley, via the so-called "dry route". The first human stood there on 31 January 1914. In the 1930s, Macocha was also made accessible via the so-called "water route," along the Punkva river through the water chambers. At the bottom of the abyss, there are two small lakes – the Lower and the Upper. Beneath the Lower lake, there are further, as yet unexplored spaces. If the water level of the lake rises, for example, during persistent rain, it connects with the Upper lake. Conversely, during periods of drought, the water dries up completely.

The Macocha Abyss is certainly the most famous tourist attraction in the entire Chráněná krajinná oblast Moravský kras (Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area). The Massive Ruin of a Gothic Castle Above Boskovická brázda

Hrad Boskovice, an extensive ruin towering above the town of Boskovice in Moravia, is one of the most significant Gothic castles in the Jihomoravský kraj (South Moravian Region). It was probably founded in the mid-thirteenth century and belonged to the estate of the lords of Boskovice, who were among the most powerful Moravian nobles. The castle was originally conceived as a guard and defensive castle. It reached its greatest expansion under Ctibor Třebovský of Boskovice in the fifteenth century. After the nobility moved to a more comfortable Renaissance chateau in the town, the castle began to decay in the seventeenth century. During the Thirty Years' War, it was still used as a military bastion, but after the war, it was definitively abandoned. Today, it is an extensive and romantic ruin that offers views of the surrounding area and is gradually being conserved. It is known for its massive defensive tower and the remains of palace structures.

Access

Hrad Boskovice is located on a hill above the town of Boskovice in the Jihomoravský kraj (South Moravian Region). Access by car is possible via road I/43 with a turn-off onto the local road leading to the castle. Parking is available below the castle. A tourist trail leads from the town to the castle. Boskovice has railway and bus connections.

In the town of Boskovice, visitors can visit the Empírový zámek Boskovice (Empire Chateau Boskovice), which served as a more comfortable residence for the Dietrichštejn family. The Židovské město Boskovice (Jewish Town of Boskovice) with its preserved synagogue is also unique. The most massive sinkhole of the Moravský kras

Rudické propadání is a dominant karst phenomenon in the central part of the CHKO Moravský kras, not far from the villages of Rudice and Jedovnice. This is the site where the Jedovnický potok suddenly disappears underground into the limestone bedrock, creating one of the longest cave systems in the Česká republika, spanning over 13 kilometres. This system, connected to Býčí skála in the Josefovské údolí, includes a cave with a cascade of waterfalls, one of which reaches a height of up to 35 metres. Underground, one can also find the Rudická propast, which, with a depth of 153 metres, is considered the deepest dry chasm in the Česká republika, as well as the impressive space of the Obří dóm. The waters of the stream overcome a gradient of up to 90 metres underground.

How to get there

The best access is from the village of Rudice, where visitors may leave their car in the free car park and follow the green tourist trail (part of the Naučná stezka Jedovnické rybníky – Rudické propadání). The entire circular nature trail is 6.5 km to 7 km long and begins in Jedovnice. A shorter section leads directly to the sinkhole, where the terrain around the cave portal is somewhat more challenging.

What to discover in the vicinity

Right by the sinkhole, visitors will find the rock formation Kolíbky, a spot popular with rock climbers. In the village of Rudice, there is a historic brick windmill with a museum and geopark that maps the history of iron mining and glassmaking. Within easy reach are also the world-famous Propast Macocha and the Moravský kras caves open to the public, such as Punkevní jeskyně, Kateřinská jeskyně, or Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně. For families, a walk to the nearby Jedovnické rybníky is highly suitable.

The town of Kuřim lies in the Brno-Country District, in the South Moravian Region. It is an important transport hub from which roads branch out in the direction of Brno, Tišnov, and Svitavy. In addition to housing major manufacturing plants that employ a large number of people from the wide surroundings, an aquapark was also built here, for which visitors also like to head to the town.

The idea to build an aquapark was toyed with by Kuřim's representatives as early as the beginning of the 1970s. It was meant to be a place where not only competitive and training swimming would take place, but it could also serve the public and the movement activities of local schools. Plans began to be implemented in 1972, and in 1977 the swimming pool opened to the public. After 35 years of continuous operation, the town management decided on a complete reconstruction, and therefore the pool was closed and work on its modernization began in 2009. A year later, the completely renovated Aquapark Kuřim already opened its gates.

Visitors can enjoy not only water fun in several indoor pools, on the water slide, or in the saunas. The recreational adventure pool offers a wild river, counter-current, water mushroom, and massage grates. Its maximum depth is 1.2 meters and the water temperature hovers around 30 degrees. Its indoor part is connected with the outdoor pool, where the finish of the water slide is located.

And it is this red, 75-meter-long water slide that is one of the most attractive features of Aquapark Kuřim. It includes a traffic light and a timekeeping system with a record memory. During the ride, lighting strips and various flashing light points alternate.

Not only for fitness swimmers, a 25-meter-long swimming pool is available. It also features a lowering mechanism for visitors with reduced mobility. Morning swimming, which takes place here on selected days in the morning, is popular. So are swimming lessons, which are available throughout the year. Visitors only need to inquire about the current schedule. There are 4 separate lanes in the pool.

For swimming lessons, the school pool is ideal. Its bottom is movable and the depth is adjustable. The pool with a length of 10 meters and a width of 6 meters can be adjusted from a minimum depth of 0.1 meters up to 1.25 meters. It is therefore used mainly for swimming lessons with young children. Part of the school pool includes 2 water spouts, which a lifeguard will start upon request.

For perfect relaxation, a whirlpool bath for 8 people and 2 steam rooms, each with a different aroma, are also part of the water park. And of course, the youngest swimmers were thought of as well. A paddling pool with a slide and water toys are prepared for them. Near the entrance hall, a space for parents with children is prepared, where changing tables can be found, along with a space where visitors can park their strollers. There is also a playroom for children, a microwave oven, and a computer with internet access. In Aquapark Kuřim, visitors can also make use of two heated benches and artificial rattan loungers. And when thirst strikes, visitors can visit the "wet" bar.

During the summer months, visitors can make use of the outdoor swimming pool, which is a separate part of the water park. A 50-meter pool, a family slide, and a children's paddling pool are prepared. On one of the two courts, visitors can play beach volleyball, jump on a trampoline, or beat friends at table tennis. Refreshments are provided by stalls and a restaurant with a summer terrace.

In short, Aquapark Kuřim is a place that is vibrant throughout the year. Therefore, visitors should definitely not miss it during their visit to Kuřim. How to get to the arboretum and what to expect on site

The Arboretum is located in the village of Borotín near Boskovice, in the Blansko district. It is possible to park a car in the immediate vicinity of the entrance. If travelling by bus, one can reach the village of Borotín comfortably, and from there, it is only a few minutes' walk to the Arboretum. Within the grounds, visitors will find benches, information boards, and shelters. Please note that there are no catering services directly in the garden, but in the village of Borotín, visitors will find refreshments where they can stop for a meal or a drink.
