It is possible to travel by train to the Dřísy station (line 232), from where the lake is approximately a 2 km walk. The main swimming season and full operation of the paid entrance usually last from 1 May to 30 September, with access restricted outside of this period.

This artistic arrangement was carried out in 1870 by the woodcarver František Rint from Česká Skalice upon the commission of the Schwarzenberg family, the lords of the estate at the time. Zámek Bon Repos, situated in the Středočeský kraj region near Čelákovice, is a unique complex of summer houses that was built as a hunting and leisure residence for a Czech nobleman. Its name, Bon Repos, means "good rest" in French, which accurately reflects its purpose. It was built at the beginning of the 18th century for Count František Antonín Špork, one of the most significant patrons of Baroque art in Bohemia. The complex consists of the main Baroque chateau and two unique auxiliary buildings. One of them is the Červený zámek, and the second is the Chinese-inspired Čínský pavilon with an octagonal floor plan, which testifies to the fashion for oriental elements at the time. After the death of Špork, the chateau changed owners and was protected, but gradually fell into disrepair. In the 1990s, the chateau passed into private ownership and is shining once again following an extensive reconstruction.

Romantic Hláska above the Sázava river in the Central Bohemian Region

The Zlenice castle ruins, also popularly known as Hláska, are situated on a rocky promontory above the Sázava river, at the point where the Mnichovický potok flows into it. The castle was likely founded at the beginning of the 14th century and is first mentioned in 1318. Among its most prominent owners was Ondřej IV. z Dubé a ze Zlenic, the Supreme Judge of the Kingdom of Bohemia during the reign of Karel IV. The castle was captured and destroyed, likely during the wars of Jiří z Poděbrad in the 15th century, and has remained abandoned ever since. The most significant preserved part is the remainder of the residential tower, which gave the ruins its nickname, Hláska.

Access

The ruins lie in the picturesque Posázaví region within the cadastral territory of the village of Senohraby. The best access is via the red tourist trail, approximately four kilometres from the Hvězdonice or Čtyřkoly railway stops (both on line 212). An undemanding walk leads to the ruins along a maintained path following the Sázava river. By car, it is possible to park in the village of Senohraby, from where a short walk leads to the ruins.

The Posázaví region is known for its beautiful nature and is ideal for hiking and canoeing on the Sázava river. In the nearby village of Hrusice, there is the Památník Josefa Lady, dedicated to the famous Czech painter who became renowned for his illustrations of this region, including Kocour Mikeš and Bubáci. Furthermore, visitors may explore Zámek Štiřín near the village of Kamenice, which serves as a conference centre and features extensive gardens.

Access

Jezero Konětopy is located north of the village of Konětopy. By car, access is available from the I/10 or II/610 roads. A free car park with limited capacity is available at the site. The closest public transport stop for bus services is Konětopy, obec, located about 500 metres from the site. The Dřísy railway station (line 232) is about a 3 km walk away. The main swimming season and full operation of services usually last from 1 June to 31 August, though swimming is also possible outside the season without services.

Ski areál Chotouň is located in the Středočeský kraj region in the village of Chotouň (part of Pohoří), near Prague, and offers simple yet well-equipped facilities for skiers, primarily beginners and families. Thanks to its proximity to the capital, it is frequently used by those seeking a quick trip for snow without the need to commute to the mountains.

The resort features several ski lifts and basic equipment for winter operations. There are four lifts available in the area: two parallel POMA-type lifts with telescopic hangers (lengths of approx. 300 m and 280 m, with a vertical drop of around 50 m), a small children's lift (approx. 70 m) with low-level cable routing, and a newly installed moving carpet (approx. 50 m) for the youngest skiers. All transport facilities have smooth speed control. The slopes are generally gentle and suitable for beginners and intermediate skiers. The altitude of the resort ranges approximately between 350 and 400 m. Due to the low elevation, the resort is equipped with a powerful snowmaking system, which utilises several snow cannons and allows for snow production at temperatures from approx. –3 °C. The slopes are groomed by a snowcat daily, and the resort also offers lighting for evening skiing. Furthermore, the area includes a ski and snowboard school, equipment rental and service, and refreshments located at the slope entrance.

How to get there

The resort is situated directly in the village of Chotouň / Pohoří, near Jílové u Prahy. For those arriving by car, free parking is provided in several areas in the immediate vicinity of the lifts. In the case of public transport, it is possible to use the PID suburban bus lines (e.g., line 444), which connect from Prague lines, for example, from metro station Smíchov ("B" line) or Budějovická ("C" line) (with a remaining short section of about 2 km).

What to discover in the surroundings

Several tourist trails and points of interest lead around the resort. From Chotouň or Pohoří, visitors may set off along the yellow tourist trail towards the educational trail Kněží hora – Halíře, which is approximately 8.5 km long. Furthermore, in the town of Jílové u Prahy, one may visit the Regionální muzeum or explore the štola Halíře (Halíře mine), which is accessible from local paths.

The resort thus offers simple yet well-operated conditions for skiing near Prague, suitable primarily for beginner skiers and families in combination with the possibility of trips in the surrounding area.

In the heart of the picturesque Český ráj landscape, not far from the village of Libošovice in the Jičín district, stands hrad Kost. It is not situated on a high peak, but rather in a valley among forests and ponds. Nevertheless, due to its distinctive silhouette and typical square tower, it is unforgettable. This best-preserved Gothic gem in our country attracts visitors for several reasons, which we will discuss below. Although the castle is privately owned, it is publicly accessible, much like other monuments. Several hiking trails and a cycling route lead to the site, and there is also a bus stop and a car park for visitors arriving by car.

The outdoor spaces around the castle are a great excursion destination in their own right. In the nicely landscaped area below the castle, you will find a tilting yard, where a regular programme featuring knights' tournaments is held during the summer. Nearby is the Kostecký pivovar brewery with a restaurant, where beer is brewed according to an original recipe. Below the dam of the Bílý rybník pond, there are two mills: the Panský mlýn and the Bývalý roubený mlýn.

The history of the castle's founding dates back to the second half of the 14th century. Local guides will captivate you as they transport you back into the castle's past. There are four tour circuits of the interior spaces to choose from. The first circuit will take you into the castle palaces and the armoury. You will also see all the courtyards, the chapel, and the black kitchen. Incidentally, this black kitchen is one of the main highlights for visitors to the castle. The first circuit lasts about an hour and will also introduce you to all the castle's owners and prominent members of the Kinský family. Are you interested in what such a medieval torture chamber looks like? Then choose the second circuit. You will return hundreds of years into the past, where you can view, for example, a functional guillotine or a witch's cage. You will learn everything about the mysteries of Czech capital law. At the same time, you will also pass through all the courtyards, the chapel, and the black kitchen. You will not miss the ground floor of the Velká bílá věž tower, which features a model of the castle and a computer animation of its development.

The second circuit also takes about an hour. The third circuit includes a tour of the entire castle. In it, you will see virtually everything that the first and second circuits include combined, plus the kaple sv. Anny. It is up to your discretion whether to undertake this nearly two-hour circuit with small children, as the commentary is detailed and the route is long. Conversely, the last, fourth tour circuit of the castle is shortened and barrier-free. If you are only at Kost for a short visit, you may choose this tour, which lasts about forty minutes. You will get a glimpse into the ground floor of the Bílá věž tower, the kaple sv. Anny, and the castle courtyard. Whichever circuit you choose, please note that dogs are welcome at this castle. They are allowed in the courtyards, and it is also possible to take them on tours inside. It is only required that the dogs be kept on a leash. You may get refreshments at the U Draka restaurant, which also features an outdoor terrace. Hrad Kost also offers accommodation, the hosting of weddings, and the rental of interior and exterior spaces for various occasions.

A trip to hrad Kost will certainly not disappoint. The entire Český ráj region is rich in beautiful castles, and one sometimes hesitates about which one to visit first. The mysterious Hrad Houska can be found in the eastern part of the Kokořínsko region, in the cadastral area of Houska, which falls under the municipality of Blatce. Thanks to its quick accessibility from Prague (less than 50 kilometres), this castle enjoys high visitor numbers for one-day trips, yet it is also a popular tourist destination during longer stays in Severozápadní Čechy. Currently, Hrad Houska is protected as a cultural monument of the Česká republika and is one of the best-preserved castles.

On the site of the present-day castle, there originally stood a fortified settlement. It was commissioned by Slavibor of the Pšovan family for his son, Houska. The contemporary Hrad Houska was built during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II sometime in the first half of the 13th century, concurrently with the nearby hrad Bezděz. It served as an important royal castle, but it subsequently passed into the possession of the nobility, a state that lasted until 1924. Following this, the castle came under the administration of Václav II, and was later owned by the lords of Dubá, the Hrzán family of Harasov, the Valdštejn family, the Kounic family, and many others.

During the succession of owners, Hrad Houska underwent several structural modifications. From an originally impregnable Gothic castle, it gradually passed through all styles, including late Romanesque. The current appearance of Houska could be characterised as a Renaissance château with elements of a Gothic castle.

In 1924, the castle was purchased by the president of the Škoda works, Mr Josef Šimonek. He carried out the necessary modifications at Hrad Houska and used it as a representative family residence until 1939. Due to its location in the Sudety region, it was used by the German army until the end of the Second World War. Since 1950, the archive of the Státní knihovna in the Klementinum has been housed at Hrad Houska. At the beginning of the 1990s, the castle was returned to the original owners through restitution – Ing. Jaromír Šimonek and MUDr. Blanka Horová.

It was precisely during this period (1999) that Hrad Houska was opened to the public. It became a venue for various cultural and social events, such as fairs, where visitors may encounter swordsmen and dancers or try their hand at various period crafts. Performances by singers and musicians will delight the ears, and a wealth of interesting information can be learned by visiting one of the permanent or seasonal exhibitions.

Hrad Houska may be visited from April to October. During the tour, a guide will lead visitors through typical sets of Gothic three-part apartments, spiral staircases, and a gallery in the courtyard. Probably the most valuable part is the closed rectangular chapel with preserved wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century, as well as the so-called Zelená komnata, which also contains original paintings from 1520. Also very interesting are the hunting salon with fallow deer trophies, the knights' hall, and the dining room with a ballroom, all of which have undergone extensive restoration.

Visitors should certainly not miss the separate tour circuit Dantovo peklo. It is located in the premises of the former carriage house and consists of a sound-enhanced and hand-carved depiction of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Karel Hynek Mácha also placed his novel Cikáni at Houska after he happened upon the site with his friend Eduard Hindl during his journey to hrad Kokořín.

The surroundings of Houska are not particularly opulent, though a smaller ornamental garden can be found here. It was founded around 1590, when Tobiáš z Harasova resided here. Currently, several woody plants grow here, among them interesting Caucasian firs, pines, and a number of cypresses. In any case, it makes for a pleasant trip, which can be combined with visits to other attractive places in the Kokořínsko region.

A Neo-Gothic Residence Surrounded by a Landscape Park, Inseparably Connected with Baroness Sidonie Nádherná.

Zámek Vrchotovy Janovice, originally a water fortress, is located approximately 60 km south of Prague in the Central Bohemian Region. It acquired its current romantic Neo-Gothic appearance following extensive reconstruction in the mid-19th century. The chateau is inseparably connected with its last private owners, the Nádherný of Borutín family, particularly the famous Baroness Sidonie Nádherná, a patron of the arts and friend of Karl Kraus and Rainer Maria Rilke. For more than 50 years, the property has been part of the exhibitions of the Národní muzeum in Prague, which presents permanent exhibitions here in an authentic environment. The dominant feature of the entire complex is an extensive, over two-hundred-year-old landscape park with a pond and rare trees, which ranks among the most admired parks in Bohemia.

Access

The chateau is located in the village of Vrchotovy Janovice. Access by car from Prague is via road number E55 (the D1 motorway) with a turnoff onto road number 3. Parking is available near the chateau. Bus transport provides connections to Benešov and Votice, with the nearest stop located directly in the village. The chateau park is accessible year-round, while the chateau interior is open according to seasonal opening hours.

What to Explore

The Kraj blanických rytířů region attracts tourists to explore. Visitors can set out for Velký Blaník, a memorable mountain with a lookout tower, which is shrouded in the legend of the Blaník knights. Not far away is the town of Votice with the Gothic Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. For families with children, an interesting stop is the Modelářský domek and the traffic playground in nearby Štětkovice.

The poet Karel Hynek Mácha fell in love with the countryside around the village of Doksy in the Česká Lípa district so much that he set the plots of many of his famous poems here. Consequently, many significant places were named after him, such as Máchovo jezero, as well as the entire region Máchův kraj. This part of the Liberecký kraj is a popular destination visited year-round by tourists from both the Czech Republic and abroad. One of the attractions, especially for history lovers, is the ruin of hrad Bezděz, which towers above the village of the same name.

Hrad Bezděz was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II in the second half of the 13th century. It is known as the place where Václav II was imprisoned at a young age. During the following period, several noble families resided in the castle: the Berkové, the lords of Michalovice, the lords of Cimburk, the Vartenberkové, and the Valdštejnové.

At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, hrad Bezděz was damaged. Albrecht z Valdštejna briefly attempted to save it, but he ultimately did not complete his plan to rebuild the castle into a modern fortress. For a time, the castle was an important pilgrimage site, but subsequently, it only fell into disrepair and gradually turned into a ruin. At present, however, it is one of the best-preserved ruins in the Czech Republic.

Even though the "tooth of time" has left its mark on hrad Bezděz, one can still see the intact remains of several palaces, fortifications, and two towers. The space of the castle chapel is also exceptional. Thanks to the National Heritage Institute, a roof reconstruction took place at hrad Bezděz at the beginning of the 20th century, and the castle was subsequently sold for a symbolic price to the Klub československých turistů. They also continued with the rescue and repairs of the castle. In 1953, the castle was transferred to state heritage care.

Visitors who wish to visit hrad Bezděz may take advantage of the period from the beginning of April to the end of October. The tour takes place without a guide. Visitors can orient themselves using a printed plan of the castle. You will visit the castle chapel, as well as the royal, manorial, Templar, or burggrave's palace. The latter palace served as the residence for the castle administrators. The most prominent of these administrators was the knight Oldřich Tista z Libštejna, with whose help King Charles IV managed to establish a pond near Doksy, today's Máchovo jezero.

Hrad Bezděz lies in the Chráněná krajinná oblast Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj. It is part of the Přírodní rezervace Velký a Malý Bezděz. Several endangered species of plants and animals can be found here, such as a population of the alpine longhorn beetle. Therefore, it is necessary to follow certain rules associated with visiting nature reserves and protected landscape areas. Hrad Bezděz itself was an inspiration for other significant artists besides Karel Hynek Mácha. You can see it in paintings by Josef Mánes, Alois Bubák, and Cín Jelínek. It also appeared in the libretto by Eliška Krásnohorská, subsequently in the opera Tajemství by Bedřich Smetana, and also in a series of historical detective novels by the author Vlastimil Vondruška. One of the longest-running comic strips in the Czech Republic, Čtyřlístek, even acquired its own Muzeum Čtyřlístku in Doksy.

What is worth knowing

In the vicinity of Smilkov, visitors may visit the historical town of Benešov with Zámek Konopiště, the well-known residence of Franz Ferdinand d'Este. Visitors may also visit Hrad Český Šternberk, a majestic Gothic castle above the Sázava river. Also of interest is Rozhledna Blaník, which offers a view of the Středočeská pahorkatina and the surrounding area.

Aquapark Staré Splavy is located on the shore of Máchovo jezero in Doksy, in the Česká Lípa district. This aquapark is truly unique, as it is not merely composed of swimming pools and attractions. The pool is set into the lake, original inflatable attractions can be found directly on the surface of the lake itself, and the premises include a sandy beach with real palm trees.

The pool with filtered water is divided into three sections with varying depths: for children, for swimmers, and a section with massage benches. Visitors may also look forward to riding super-fast water slides that finish directly in the lake. On the surface of the lake, entertainment can be enjoyed on various types of inflatable attractions.
