The first written mention of the village dates back to the first half of the 16th century, but the village experienced its true boom only in the 1990s. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the village representatives bet on the right horse and began to address massive investments in tourism. Several hundred million crowns were invested in the Lipno infrastructure. The result was the development and construction of a snowboard park, the Lipno-Kramolín area for skiers, a golf course, and an aquapark. Thanks to this, tourists can use several ski slopes on the slopes of Kramolín and Slupečný vrch, dozens of kilometres of groomed cross-country trails, and in summer, hiking and cycling trails around Lipno and the local reservoir are in operation (the Jezerní I and II or Tomášská cyklostezka, leading around Vítkův hrádek and through Frymburk).
A true pride of Lipno is the Landal Marina Lipno facility, a multifunctional complex which, in addition to an aquapark and other attractions, also includes the largest marina for sailboats in Central Europe.
