Ski areál Vesec is not a typical downhill skiing resort, but it is primarily a recreational and sports cross-country skiing area situated on the southeastern outskirts of the city of Liberec, in the city district of Vesec. The Vodní nádrž Souš reservoir is situated on the Černá Desná river above the town of Desná in the Liberecký kraj region. The dams were built between 1911 and 1915 as flood protection for the Jizerské hory mountains. However, the dam on the Bílá Desná burst just 10 months after its completion in 1916, sweeping away 100 houses and claiming 65 lives. After this disaster, local residents insisted on draining Souš and only refilling it after a thorough inspection of the reservoir's condition to ensure that such a catastrophe would not happen again. The Souš dam was therefore only refilled after reconstruction between 1924 and 1927. In the 1970s, the dam originally served, among other things, for recreation, but since 1973 it has served as a drinking water reservoir for the Tanvaldsko and Jablonecko regions. Fishing and swimming are therefore understandably prohibited, and the area around the Souš reservoir is strictly protected.

The Souš dam covers an area of nearly 86 hectares. Its embankment is earth-fill, and the concrete wall reaches a depth of 8 metres. A 19.1-metre-high tower structure stands in the reservoir, used for water abstraction for water supply purposes. As this is a drinking water reservoir, a water treatment plant stands on its right bank, where water hardness is reduced and its oxidisability and colour are adjusted. Only once treated in this way does the water continue through pipes to the water reservoir in Tanvald and from there to Jablonec nad Nisou.

Interactive Exhibition in a Functional Hydroelectric Power Plant

The Muzeum obnovitelných zdrojů energie is housed in the building of a historical hydroelectric power plant in the village of Velké Hamry on the Kamenice River (Jablonec nad Nisou district). Even in the Liberecký kraj region, specifically in the Semily district, interesting caves can be found. Less than a kilometre from the village of Bozkov are the Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně, which represent the most extensive cave area in North-Eastern Bohemia. The caves are formed of calcareous dolomite and have been designated a national natural monument since 1999. To date, just over 1,000 metres have been explored, making them the longest dolomite caves in the country.

The Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně were formed gradually due to the corrosive activity of underground water. Currently, two separate systems of corridors and halls exist, which were connected by an extensive gallery and excavations at the time the entire system was made accessible to the public. In the lowest parts, the caves remain flooded with water, thus forming the most extensive underground lakes in the Czech Republic.

Visitors who choose to tour the Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně are welcome to bring children along. The tour is not physically demanding and takes approximately 45 minutes. It earned its name due to the blue lighting from ultraviolet lights. The Půlnoční jeskyně is freely connected to the Za prahem cave. In these areas, the natural decoration was damaged by the collapse of rock blocks.

Slowly moving forward along the path around Mechová zahrádka, one arrives at Křižovatka. Here, the tour of the Nové jeskyně circuit begins. Via the Souběžná and Pirátská corridors, one reaches the thematically lit Peklo cave. This is likely to be particularly enjoyed by children. After all, the mysterious underground and the mention of hell will certainly capture their interest and imagination.

Once visitors manage to get out of Peklo, two small Labutí jezírka can be seen to the side. Subsequently, passing the inaccessible areas known as Betlém, one reaches the Loupežnická cave. Then, one simply walks through the Blátivá corridor past the rock niche known as Chlebová pec, and one is back at Křižovatka, at the end of the Nové jeskyně circuit.

From here, a gentle ascent through an artificial tunnel leads to the opening through which the first explorers entered. This is the first level, the so-called Staré Bozkovské jeskyně. Right at the beginning of this circuit, the Prušácká přilba is sure to catch the eye. It is a large sinter block, including a part of a "curtain", which was formed by the gradual shifting of rock.

Subsequently, following the route of the explorers, one passes the Bludiště to reach the Překvapení cave. Visitors are sure to enjoy this area. The magnificent stalactite decoration and the number of stalactites, which form the Bozkovské varhany on the front wall, are complemented by the stalagmites Palec and Ukazovák. To see the large stalactite called Raketa, one must move on to the Listopadová cave. Subsequently, passing Sloní uši, Rokokové panenky, and Perníková chaloupka, one arrives at the starting point of the Staré jeskyně circuit.

And here, the highlight of the tour awaits, the largest underground lake in Bohemia, which is also the lowest point of the Bozkovské dolomitové jeskyně. To these superlatives, the largest space discovered so far can be added the Jezerní dóm, behind which the Mládežnický dóm is located, representing the final section of the entire tour route.

Máchovo jezero, or "Macháč" as most of us know it, was established on the instructions of the Czech King and Emperor Karel IV. as early as the 14th century, originally as the Velký rybník. It is situated in the town of Doksy in the Česká Lípa district and covers an area of 284 hectares. In the 19th century, it was significantly popularised by the poet Karel Hynek Mácha, who set the plot of his most famous poem, Máj, right here, and in whose honour the lake's name was later changed. It serves as the centre of the region of the same name, Máchův kraj.

On the shores of Máchovo jezero, there are 4 large beaches. For vacationers, there is a variety of campsites, snack stands, and boat rentals available. During the summer season, it is certainly a pleasant experience to set off on a sightseeing cruise by steamer. This allows visitors to get closer to the two islets located on Máchovo jezero, namely Myší and Kachní. As they are an important and protected ornithological site, entry to them is prohibited.

Fishermen and hikers will also find plenty to enjoy here. In the vicinity of Máchovo jezero, there is a multitude of tourist routes and educational trails. One of them is the children's trail Se Čtyřlístkem okolo Blaťáku, which belongs to the nearby Muzeum Čtyřlístku. Máchovo jezero actually served as the inspiration for the lake Blaťák, known precisely from the Čtyřlístek comics. In the northern part of Máchovo jezero stands Jarmilina skála. It was by jumping from this rock that Jarmila, the heroine of Karel Hynek Mácha's poem Máj, ended her life.

Máchovo jezero has also gained fans outside the summer season. As soon as its surface freezes and is covered with snow, skaters and cross-country skiers from the surrounding area can be seen rushing across it. It is therefore a place that can be visited throughout the year. Visitors are invited to come to Máchův kraj and discover the beautiful places that Karel Hynek Mácha extolled in his poems. The highest waterfall in the Czech Republic is Pančavský vodopád in the Krkonoše mountains. Its height is an impressive 148 metres. It is located on the Pančava stream, which is a right-bank tributary of the Labe river. Together with Labský vodopád, it forms a system of viewpoints in Labský důl. One of the most famous is Ambrožova vyhlídka, from which Labský důl, Kotel, and Kozí hřbety are spread out before visitors. This is not the only reason why Pančavský vodopád is a sought-after tourist location.

The waterfall reaches its greatest flow during the spring thaw in April and May. In these months, the large volume of water forms several separate branches. The waterfall itself has a cascading character, and its width varies depending on the season, ranging from 4 to 8 metres.

Access to Pančavský vodopád itself is restricted, as it is located in the first zone of the Krkonošský národní park. A marked tourist trail leads from Špindlerův Mlýn around the waterfalls. Those who take this path will certainly not regret it. In addition to wonderful views, many other attractions await. Just above the waterfall is a memorial plaque to Otokar Štětka, who was the head of the Horská záchranná služba Krkonoše for more than half a century.

Further along, visitors will also encounter the Mohyla Hanče a Vrbaty. This is a monument to the famous skier Bohumil Hanč, who died here during a race, and his friend Václav Vrbata, who tried to help him. The trail continues into the western Krkonoše and branches off in several directions. It is possible to reach the source of the Labe river, the Sněžné jámy, from which it is possible to see as far as Poland or Harrachov to see the famous Mumlavský vodopád.

However, let us return to Pančavský vodopád, which derived its name from the German word "plantschen," meaning to splash or spray. It has been a frequent destination for tourists since the past. In 1859, a local hotelier, Josef Schier, had a small reservoir with a sluice gate built above the upper part of the waterfall. He used this to increase the flow of the waterfall, particularly as an attraction for paying tourists. At that time, an upper viewing terrace and several refreshment stalls were also in operation. In the first half of the 20th century, however, the terrace and refreshments were removed.

Nevertheless, this does not detract from the picturesqueness of this place. Therefore, it should definitely not be missed when choosing Krkonoše attractions. The highest mountains offer a great deal indeed. There is something here for everyone. Hikers certainly cannot leave without conquering Sněžka, skiers have a choice of several top-tier ski resorts, and children will long remember the Stezka korunami stromů Krkonoše.

The symbol of Český ráj is the ruin of Hrad Trosky. It is situated on the hill of Trosky near the village of Troskovice in the Semily district and falls under the Liberecký kraj region. The late medieval castle was considered impregnable in its time and stands on a unique volcanic rock formation. Visitors are invited to discover one of the most sought-after castles in the Czech Republic.

From a distance, the structure of the ruin resembles horns set into the ground. The Gothic castle was built on a pair of steep basalt rocks of volcanic origin, which ensured its complete security. An inner castle with living quarters was established between the two peaks, and defensive (as well as residential) towers were built on the two crags. The lower one, with a more substantial appearance, is named Baba and was a hexagonal, two-storey structure. A rectangular, three-storey building was erected on the higher peak; it once housed a chapel, and the tower is named Panna. It is also the highest point of the castle, reaching 514 metres above sea level. There was a well in the first courtyard, and rainwater reservoirs were carved into the rock on the Panna tower. It is assumed that there are cellars and cave spaces with small lakes under the castle, likely belonging to the Sklepy cave system (part of the Apolena rock city).

The first written references to the castle appear from 1396, although archaeologists believe the castle was founded much earlier. It is assumed that the founder was Čeněk z Vartenberka. Subsequently, the castle passed to various owners; during the Thirty Years' War, it was used as a fortress and was captured by the Swedes in 1639. Armies alternated here, and after the last garrison left, the structure began to deteriorate and became a ruin. From 1925, it was owned by the then Czechoslovak Republic. Around that year, the Klub českých turistů began to repair the ruin, and work continued intermittently for several years. Expert repairs have been carried out by the Státní památkový ústav over the last few years.

Tours of the castle are conducted without a guide or specific tour circuits, meaning visitors have free access around the premises. Those arriving by car may park below the castle in the car park and then continue on foot for approximately 250 metres. When travelling by train, visitors may disembark in the village of Borek pod Troskami and follow the blue tourist trail. Alternatively, they may disembark in the village of Ktová and follow the green trail. Both routes are approximately 3.5 kilometres long. Cyclists may utilise cycle paths leading to the castle gate, where lockable racks are available.

The bell tower with inverted bells, situated in the municipality of Hrochův Týnec in the Pardubice Region, is neither a castle nor a chateau, but a unique 16th-century Renaissance bell tower that serves as a significant technical and architectural monument. The bell tower is a world rarity, as its bells are fixed and mounted upside down; it is not the bells that move, but the entire structure. This system is known as a rotating bell and provides a specific method of ringing. The bell tower is part of the premises of the Kostel svatého Michala Archanděla and represents a rare example of Renaissance timber architecture in the region.

Access

The bell tower is located in the municipality of Hrochův Týnec, at the address Hrochův Týnec 1. By car, it is accessible from the I/17 or II/358 roads. Parking is available at a free car park near the village. The nearest bus stop is Hrochův Týnec, náměstí, which is within walking distance. Transport for skiers is provided by one Tatrapoma FP ski lift with a capacity of 600 persons per hour, which fully meets the resort’s needs. Thanks to artificial lighting, evening skiing is also available. A Snowpark with daily groomed obstacles is prepared for snowboarders. The slopes are regularly equipped with artificial snow and are groomed. Directly from the upper station of the lift, it is possible to join maintained cross-country skiing trails spanning several tens of kilometres, such as the Buď fit circuits or the Na Hraběnce – Střelnice route.

How to get there

The Ski areál Kozinec is located in the Jilemnice – Hrabačov district, near the road towards Harrachov. On the approach route from Jilemnice, one must turn left after the railway tracks. A free car park is available for visitors directly at the lower lift station. The nearest railway station is Jilemnice, located approximately 1.5 km away, from where it is possible to continue on foot or via local transport.

Jilemnice and its surroundings in the western Krkonoše offer rich opportunities for year-round tourism. Directly in the town of Jilemnice, one can find the Krkonošské muzeum located in the historical chateau, where, among other things, the unique Metelkův mechanický betlém is on display. Another tourist attraction is the collection of folk architecture known as Zvědavá ulička. In the vicinity of the resort, there is a great opportunity to set out on a hike to the Žalý peak, where the rozhledna Žalý stands, offering panoramic views of the Krkonoše. A few kilometres from Jilemnice lies the Zámek Horní Branná, associated with the stay of Jan Amos Komenský. For skiing in the wider area, it is possible to visit larger ski resorts such as the Ski areál Benecko or the Ski areál Herlíkovice.

One of the smaller ski resorts, Horní Mísečky, can be found on the slopes of Medvědín, at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level. It lies to the north of Vítkovice and to the west of Špindlerův Mlýn. It is the youngest ski resort included in the Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn complex. Alongside it, the complex also includes Skiareál Svatý Petr, Skiareál Medvědín, and the Hromovka Ski resort. The resort is situated in the magnificent countryside of the Krkonoše národní park.

The Ski areál Horní Mísečky is particularly suitable for families with children. The local slope is of a gentle gradient while also being sufficiently wide and clear, ensuring children remain within sight at all times. However, children are not the only ones taking their first skiing steps here. Adults who have not had the chance to learn to ski until now or wish to refine their technique also gladly make use of Horní Mísečky.

A comfortable quad chairlift transports visitors to the start of the slope. There are also three smaller lifts located in the lower section of the slope. Furthermore, additional areas are available where visitors can enjoy plenty of fun, such as the Funtrack situated in the upper part of the resort. It consists of various bumps, turns, waves, and other intricate features designed to make skiing even more entertaining.

The Burton snowpark, located on the slope most exposed to the sun's rays, must not be overlooked either. Various obstacles await visitors here as well, guaranteeing a perfect day full of fun and adrenaline on the slope. Artificial snowmaking is available throughout the entire Ski areál Horní Mísečky, ensuring skiing is guaranteed even during a lack of snow. Snowmaking equipment is also distributed along the local cross-country skiing area. Here, maintained cross-country loops ranging from 1 to 10 kilometres in length are located, or visitors can set off on a cross-country trail towards Benecko, Rokytnice nad Jizerou, Harrachov, or Labská bouda.

In addition to the aforementioned ski resorts belonging to Skiareál Špindlerův Mlýn, smaller slopes can also be found in the surrounding area, such as Skiareál Vurmovka or Lyžařský areál Janova Hora, along with plenty of other places well worth visiting when embarking on a trip to the Krkonoše. Mohyla Hanče a Vrbaty above Horní Mísečky possesses a special atmosphere. It commemorates the tragic event of 1913 when, during a skiing race, adverse weather conditions caused the deaths of the competitor Bohumil Hanč and his friend Václav Vrbata, who had set out to help him.

Given that the Krkonoše are a very popular winter destination, everything is adapted to ensure visitors feel welcome and gladly return. In the Semily District, south of Lomnice nad Popelkou, stands Allainova věž. It served as a hunting seat for the lords of the Rohan family and is now used as a lookout tower. From its gallery, there are beautiful views of the local hills and the town of Jičín. The tower was dedicated to the tragically deceased young Prince Allain.

The lookout tower was built in the neo-Gothic style within the local Rohan game preserve. This was brought about by Kamil Josef Rohan, who commissioned the architect Josef Pruvot to draw up a plan for the opulent hunting seat. Costs climbed to 1,714 florins, and construction was completed in 1862. It has an octagonal floor plan covering an area of more than 30 m². The tower is single-storeyed, made of stone, 10.5 m high, and stands at an altitude of 540 m above sea level. Various inscriptions are placed here, one of which is connected to the tragic event involving the nephew of Kamil Josef Rohan, Prince Allain. He fell from a horse during a hunt and died (he was 28 years old). Kamil Josef Rohan suffered from remorse because when Allain's father (the brother of Kamil Josef Rohan) was dying, he promised to look after the young prince. However, he failed to fulfil this. Therefore, he dedicated the tower to the memory of his nephew. In 1945, based on the Beneš decrees, the property was confiscated from the Rohans, the tower was used as animal feed storage, and subsequently, it was completely abandoned. It suffered from vandalism and general decay. In 2013, when it almost became a ruin, it came into the ownership of Lomnice nad Popelkou. The town began its extensive reconstruction, and the surroundings of the lookout tower were also landscaped. Information boards, benches, and bicycle racks were installed.

The lookout tower can be found along the path leading from the Kyje u Jičína railway station, which has yellow tourist markings, and from the crossroads along the blue markings (1.5 km). The route is also cyclable. Near the viewpoint, visitors can admire a memorial oak tree and refresh themselves at the local spring.

Near Lomnice nad Popelkou, many interesting places to visit can be found. Hrad Trosky, the Válečné muzeum Újezd pod Troskami, or the Lyžařský areál Lomnice nad Popelkou should not be missed. The poet Karel Hynek Mácha fell in love with the countryside around the village of Doksy in the Česká Lípa district so much that he set the plots of many of his famous poems here. One of the attractions, especially for history lovers, is the ruin of hrad Bezděz, which towers above the village of the same name.

Hrad Bezděz was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II in the second half of the 13th century. It is known as the place where Václav II was imprisoned at a young age. During the following period, several noble families resided in the castle: the Berkové, the lords of Michalovice, the lords of Cimburk, the Vartenberkové, and the Valdštejnové.

At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, hrad Bezděz was damaged. Albrecht z Valdštejna briefly attempted to save it, but he ultimately did not complete his plan to rebuild the castle into a modern fortress. For a time, the castle was an important pilgrimage site, but subsequently, it only fell into disrepair and gradually turned into a ruin. At present, however, it is one of the best-preserved ruins in the Czech Republic.

Even though the "tooth of time" has left its mark on hrad Bezděz, one can still see the intact remains of several palaces, fortifications, and two towers. The space of the castle chapel is also exceptional. Thanks to the National Heritage Institute, a roof reconstruction took place at hrad Bezděz at the beginning of the 20th century, and the castle was subsequently sold for a symbolic price to the Klub československých turistů. They also continued with the rescue and repairs of the castle. In 1953, the castle was transferred to state heritage care.

Visitors who wish to visit hrad Bezděz may take advantage of the period from the beginning of April to the end of October. The tour takes place without a guide. Visitors can orient themselves using a printed plan of the castle. You will visit the castle chapel, as well as the royal, manorial, Templar, or burggrave's palace. The latter palace served as the residence for the castle administrators. The most prominent of these administrators was the knight Oldřich Tista z Libštejna, with whose help King Charles IV managed to establish a pond near Doksy, today's Máchovo jezero.

Hrad Bezděz lies in the Chráněná krajinná oblast Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj. It is part of the Přírodní rezervace Velký a Malý Bezděz. Several endangered species of plants and animals can be found here, such as a population of the alpine longhorn beetle. One of the longest-running comic strips in the Czech Republic, Čtyřlístek, even acquired its own Muzeum Čtyřlístku in Doksy.

The mysterious Hrad Houska can be found in the eastern part of the Kokořínsko region, in the cadastral area of Houska, which falls under the municipality of Blatce. Currently, Hrad Houska is protected as a cultural monument of the Česká republika and is one of the best-preserved castles.

On the site of the present-day castle, there originally stood a fortified settlement. It was commissioned by Slavibor of the Pšovan family for his son, Houska. The contemporary Hrad Houska was built during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II sometime in the first half of the 13th century, concurrently with the nearby hrad Bezděz. It served as an important royal castle, but it subsequently passed into the possession of the nobility, a state that lasted until 1924. Following this, the castle came under the administration of Václav II, and was later owned by the lords of Dubá, the Hrzán family of Harasov, the Valdštejn family, the Kounic family, and many others.

During the succession of owners, Hrad Houska underwent several structural modifications. From an originally impregnable Gothic castle, it gradually passed through all styles, including late Romanesque. The current appearance of Houska could be characterised as a Renaissance château with elements of a Gothic castle.

In 1924, the castle was purchased by the president of the Škoda works, Mr Josef Šimonek. He carried out the necessary modifications at Hrad Houska and used it as a representative family residence until 1939. Due to its location in the Sudety region, it was used by the German army until the end of the Second World War. Since 1950, the archive of the Státní knihovna in the Klementinum has been housed at Hrad Houska. At the beginning of the 1990s, the castle was returned to the original owners through restitution – Ing. Jaromír Šimonek and MUDr. Blanka Horová.

It was precisely during this period (1999) that Hrad Houska was opened to the public. It became a venue for various cultural and social events, such as fairs, where visitors may encounter swordsmen and dancers or try their hand at various period crafts. Performances by singers and musicians will delight the ears, and a wealth of interesting information can be learned by visiting one of the permanent or seasonal exhibitions.

Hrad Houska may be visited from April to October. During the tour, a guide will lead visitors through typical sets of Gothic three-part apartments, spiral staircases, and a gallery in the courtyard. Probably the most valuable part is the closed rectangular chapel with preserved wall paintings from the first half of the 14th century, as well as the so-called Zelená komnata, which also contains original paintings from 1520. Also very interesting are the hunting salon with fallow deer trophies, the knights' hall, and the dining room with a ballroom, all of which have undergone extensive restoration.

Visitors should certainly not miss the separate tour circuit Dantovo peklo. It is located in the premises of the former carriage house and consists of a sound-enhanced and hand-carved depiction of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Karel Hynek Mácha also placed his novel Cikáni at Houska after he happened upon the site with his friend Eduard Hindl during his journey to hrad Kokořín.

The surroundings of Houska are not particularly opulent, though a smaller ornamental garden can be found here. It was founded around 1590, when Tobiáš z Harasova resided here. Currently, several woody plants grow here, among them interesting Caucasian firs, pines, and a number of cypresses. In any case, it makes for a pleasant trip, which can be combined with visits to other attractive places in the Kokořínsko region.
