At the foot of the Slavkovský les in the Karlovarský kraj, the royal Gothic hrad Loket towers on a rocky promontory above the Ohře river. This castle in the village of Loket in the Sokolov district was already one of the strongholds on the border with the Chebsko region in the 13th century; it is quite possible that it was built as a border fortress. Since 1989, it has been accessible to the public, who may view an exhibition of porcelain, weapons, and an impressive exhibition on torture law in the premises of the former prison.

The exact date of the founding of hrad Loket is unknown, and the name of its founder is not known with certainty either, but it is assumed that the history of the castle began in the second half of the 12th century. There are written reports from 1234, but it became better known to us only at the beginning of the 14th century, when the future king Karel IV was imprisoned at hrad Loket. In the Middle Ages, hrad Loket faced attempts at conquest many times, but it withstood all attacks and was never conquered. In the 16th century, it became the property of Loket burghers, and city councillors even held meetings here. After being besieged by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War, the castle became a border fortress, and at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, it was converted into a prison, which operated until 1948. Since 1992, after several changes, the castle has once again been the property of the city, which has begun a new chapter for the castle, restored its ancient beauty, and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Hrad Loket offers several "bests". For example, the 12th-century rotunda sv. Anežky, which was discovered in 1966, is the smallest rotunda in the world due to its diameter of 3.6 metres. Visitors will also see the largest Czech meteorite here, which allegedly fell into the Loket courtyard. The most prominent landmark of hrad Loket is the 26-metre-high tower, which offers a view of the wide surroundings. In the past, there was a room with a fireplace and a medieval toilet here. Below the castle tower, visitors may visit the permanent exhibition of historical weapons, where both firearms and so-called cold weapons can be seen. The exhibition is also supplemented by plate armour, helmets, and shooting targets. For strong stomachs only, there is an authentic depiction of the torture process of the accused, who were supposed to confess to their crimes.

Monumental granite formations in the Ohře river canyon

Svatošské skály, officially named Národní přírodní památka Jan Svatoš, represent a geomorphologically unique granite rock formation located in the romantic valley of the Ohře river, in the Karlovarský kraj, between Karlovy Vary (the Doubí district) and the town of Loket. These rock massifs are composed of Loket granite and were formed by the erosive action of the river, frost weathering, and the gradual removal of rock, which led to the creation of massive rock pillars, prisms, and pyramids. Some of the rock towers reach an impressive height of up to 50 metres. The area was declared protected as early as 1933. According to an ancient legend about Jan Svatoš, who broke a promise made to a water nymph, the nymph turned his entire wedding procession into stone formations. The rocks are thus named after the individual wedding participants and bear names such as Ženich (a massive rock chimney), Nevěsta, Páter, Svědkové, Muzikanti, and Tchyně. This picturesque place inspired the famous writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud.

How to get there

Svatošské skály are located approximately 10 km southwest of the centre of Karlovy Vary and are accessible exclusively to pedestrians, cyclists, and water tourists, as motor vehicles are prohibited from entering this protected area. The most popular and simplest access is on foot or by bike from Karlovy Vary, specifically from the Doubí district. In Karlovy Vary-Doubí, there is a park-and-ride car park, from which a flat path leads along the Ohře river. From the car park, a route approximately 2.5 to 3 km long leads to the rocks following the blue tourist trail, which is also part of cycle route No. 204. From the centre of Karlovy Vary, you can also reach Doubí by bus number 305. A second option is to set out on foot from the town of Loket, where a route approximately 7 km long begins at the Goethův pomník. Directly at the rocks, a romantic suspension bridge intended for pedestrians and cyclists serves to cross the river.

The history of the Termální koupaliště Brná dates back to 1930, when the first source of thermal water was drilled. Just a year later, a thermal swimming pool was built on this site, and six years later, bathtub baths were established here. Today, the thermal springs are used only for bathing, although in the past, the water was also bottled for drinking cures.

Ski areál Saporo was founded in 1972, with significant modernisations taking place in the late 1980s, and lighting for the slope was added in 2006. The lift boarding area lies at an altitude of 580 metres above sea level, and the upper part of the slope reaches an altitude of 742 metres above sea level, representing a total vertical drop of 162 metres. The single downhill track is 1 kilometre long and is classified as a red slope due to its difficulty. Transport for skiers is provided by a fast TATRAPOMA-type lift, 760 metres long, with a capacity of approximately 900 persons per hour. Thanks to the lighting, the popular option of night skiing is also available here. Since 2020, the resort has expanded its offer with summer operations, when the lift is used to transport cyclists to the Trail Park Saporo, which offers both natural and artificially built tracks for DH-downhill and MTB-Enduro.

How to get to the resort

The resort is located by the main road leading from Kraslice in the direction of Luby. For arrival by car, there is a large car park located on the right side of the road (when travelling from the centre of Kraslice), while the access to the slope is located opposite. It is possible to reach Kraslice by bus lines as well as by train. The Kraslice railway station, which is connected to the surrounding network in the Krušné hory mountains, is within a reasonable distance for use.

The town of Kraslice and its surroundings in the Krušné hory mountains offer tourists a wealth of activities. Directly from Saporo, it is possible to connect to a network of cycling routes and walking trails leading into the surrounding forests and onto the ridges. Given its location in the central part of the western Krušné hory, it is possible to use the extensive network of marked tourist trails of the Klub českých turistů (KČT). The history of this body of water is closely linked to the end of coal mining, after which it was necessary to proceed with the overall reclamation and revitalisation of the affected area. Mining in the pits ceased in the year 2000. However, another 8 years passed before the filling of Medard could begin. It only reached its planned water level in 2016. An interesting fact is that in 2020, it was the largest artificially created lake in the Czech Republic. Its total area is 500 ha, it is 4 km long, 1.5 km wide, and its depth is an impressive 57 m.

Primarily, jezero Medard serves as a venue for water sports. For swimming, the nearby jezero Michal, which serves as a natural swimming pool, is more suitable. Furthermore, the surroundings of jezero Medard are still undergoing extensive revitalisation, which brings visitors fishing clubs and bird islands, allowing for the real-time observation of water birds. You can also look forward to a walk along the Alej přátelství, which was created to mark the 100th anniversary of the Republic. It is interesting to note that buckets are available next to the trees, which can be used to draw water from the lake for watering. Mostecké jezero stretches across the northern part of the city of Most. Originally, the historical city of Most stood in this area. In the second half of the twentieth century, reserves were discovered under the city, leading to its demolition. The Ležáky brown coal mine was established here, where mining took place until the end of the 1990s. As part of the reclamation process in the new millennium, the pit was flooded, and it has become a popular recreational spot.

The lake covers an area of 309 ha, making it the second-largest lake in the Czech Republic. Its width reaches 1.9 km, its length 3 km, and its depth reaches up to 71 m in some places. The filling of the pit, which remained here after mining activities, began on 24 October 2008. A feeder was created to the lake, through which water flowed in from the Ohře river. The filling process took place until September 2014, with a break between 2012 and 2013, when the reaction of the surrounding area was monitored. Even after it was filled, the water surface was only in trial operation. It was opened to the public on 12 September 2020, following the modification of the banks and the construction of access roads. The entire area that underwent revitalisation represents 1,300 ha.

At present, the lake contains clear and very clean water. Terraced pebble beaches lead to the water surface, and you will also find piers here that allow easier access to the water. On the shore, you will find a beach volleyball court, a large children's playground, and ping-pong tables. Vacationers with their four-legged friends will also find their own special beaches by the lake. Thanks to its size, there is space on the lake not only for swimming and water sports but also for boat transport. A quiet zone intended for the development of fauna and flora is also designated by the lake. The clear water of the lake, with visibility of up to 8 m, also attracts divers here. Fishing is not possible here due to the controlled stock; eight species of fish live in the water, including northern pike and catfish.

A 9 km-long circuit leads around Mostecké jezero, and you can also walk along an educational trail (2.5 km) that explains the process of filling the lake. During your wanderings, especially in winter, you can observe birds; the water surface is a significant wintering ground, with 26 species having been observed here, including the white-tailed eagle. The cycling path attracts many cyclists and in-line skaters to this area. You can easily reach the lake directly by car via the road network. A spacious car park can be found above the main beach, and in summer, a nearby grassy area also serves this purpose; parking is free of charge. In 2021, facilities with sanitary amenities, refreshments, and seating with a view were built by the water. Further modifications are planned for the future, with attractions for both young and old expected to be added, as well as a harbour and a campsite.

In Most, other attractions are also associated with coal mining. The Uhelné safari will show you how mining takes place in the pits during full operation, and you will also become familiar with the processes of subsequent landscape reclamation. The historical pride of the city is the hrad Hněvín castle. Those who prefer looking at the stars will enjoy a visit to the observatory on Hněvín or the Most planetarium. The city has also thought of those who are not fans of natural swimming; the Aquadrom, with its outdoor and indoor pools, attractions, and wellness zone, is in operation for them.
