Nature Reserve Písečný přesyp u Vlkova – the Czech Sahara among forests

On the edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area, less than a kilometer northwest of the village of Vlkov u Veselí nad Lužnicí, lies a unique sand dune — a small but remarkable nature reserve with dunes up to 4–6 meters high and an area of about 0.8 ha. Formed by wind-blown sand from the nearby river at the turn of the Pleistocene, it has preserved its original form — a silent fragment of desert in the heart of South Bohemia.

What will impress you here – a natural stage in the sand

  • Dunes form distinct yellow surfaces without vegetation, where the wind creates characteristic ripples in the sand
  • Rare dry-loving plants grow here — such as Morison’s knapweed, grey club-rush, and fine- and rough-leaved fescues
  • Home to specialized insects, including the solitary bee Andrena vaga, the beetle Anisoplila villosa, and the wolf spider Arctosa perita
  • The area is part of the Veselské pískovny educational trail, which introduces the geology and biology of this site

Who will find inspiration here

  • Nature and geology lovers who wish to discover a unique sandy environment
  • Cyclists, hikers, and photographers who will appreciate the unusual contrast of desert scenery in a forest setting
  • The area is accessible via a flat route — suitable also for visitors with limited mobility
  • Access to unpaved dune surfaces is prohibited for nature conservation reasons

How to get here and what awaits you
You can reach the reserve on foot along the yellow tourist trail from Vlkov or Veselí nad Lužnicí. The trailhead offers convenient parking at Veselské pískovny. Nearby you will also find educational boards, lakes for swimming, and peaceful nature perfect for an easy walk.

Písečný přesyp u Vlkova – silence breathing the story of an ancient landscape
This small “Czech Sahara” is a hidden natural treasure, where desert silence and life in the sand create a special symphony. Come here to feel the space, contrast, and ancient history of sand.

Jemčina Chateau – a hunting chateau where history whispers among centuries-old oaks

On the edge of the Třeboň forests, in the village of Jemčina, stands a Baroque hunting chateau from the mid-18th century, built by the Černín family as an elegant hunting residence with a noble chapel. Today the building is closed to the public, but even from the outside it feels like a mysterious pearl, surrounded by an English park full of ancient monumental trees.

What you can admire only from the outside – Baroque symphony and forest scenery

  • A two-storey, three-winged structure with an honor courtyard in the shape of a U, the original stud farm transformed into a small chateau by architect Lurago
  • The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, 19 meters high, decorated with frescoes – the most precious part of the chateau
  • The surrounding park with monumental trees and a geometric chateau arrangement, the adjacent game preserve transformed forests for hunting purposes
  • The chateau also served as a military base in the second half of the 20th century, reflecting the dynamic history of the place

Who Jemčina breathes for the most

  • For lovers of Baroque architecture and quiet forest corners who appreciate the aesthetics of the chateau and the surrounding park
  • For photographers and romantics finding inspiration in a building hidden among trees
  • The grounds are accessible from the outside – you can walk in the park and around the courtyard
  • Entry with dogs is not suitable
  • Difficulty of visit: very easy
  • Average length of stay: 1 hour

How to get here – a walk through the forest, peace and views from outside
Jemčina Chateau lies about 15 km northeast of Třeboň, next to the Nežárka River. It is easily accessible by car or bike; the start of the walking route can be combined with a cycling trip. Parking is available by the road or in the nearby village, and a walk through the park and game preserve offers a quiet, peaceful experience.

A chateau where history can be heard in the rustling leaves

A journey into the ancient past among dinosaurs and trilobites

On the edge of the Třeboň region, in the village of Roseč, visitors will find the unique Muzeum fosilií, which was created by collectors Henk and Nolly Blaas from the Netherlands. This collection, built over a long period and ranking among the largest private palaeontological collections in the Czech Republic, offers a fascinating insight into the evolution of life from the Palaeozoic era to mammals.

What will surprise you at the museum

Step into a world where time stood still millions of years ago. The chronologically arranged exhibition guides visitors through the fascinating history of our planet, from tiny trilobites and ammonites through shark and mosasaur teeth to massive dinosaur bones or mammoth molars. Visitors will also see unique fossilised parts of prehistoric plants that tell stories of long-extinct ecosystems.

The experience of the tour is enhanced by an interactive approach. Some exhibits may be viewed from a very close distance, or visitors can even handle them to experience the weight of history first-hand. The entire journey through prehistory is complemented by expert panels in a natural history style, which clearly explain the biological and geological processes of fossilisation. Furthermore, the museum is part of the popular interactive complex Fantazia (formerly known as Houbový park), where a fairy-tale world full of dinosaurs, gnomes, and creative workshops awaits.

Who the museum is perfect for

The museum is designed to thrill young and old explorers with a passion for prehistory, dinosaur stories, or the ecology of our planet. It is an ideal destination for families with children, school groups, or curious individuals looking for an interactive and visually attractive experience.

Movement within the complex is very comfortable, as all areas are accessible on level ground, which will be appreciated by visitors with limited mobility. Please note only that, given the nature of the exhibition and the focus of the complex, entry with dogs is not suitable.

Where to find the museum and what awaits you on site

The museum is located directly in the village of Roseč, 22 km north-east of Třeboň, easily accessible by car, by bicycle, or on foot. Parking is available at the entrance to Fantazia, where refreshments and toilets can also be found. The location is accessible during and outside the season, and in the complex, visitors may enjoy entertainment, nature, and fairy tales.

An experiential journey into the depths of prehistory

Muzeum fosilií in Roseč is an exceptional place where education meets adventure. Every step among the fossils opens the door to epochs with dinosaurs, trilobites, and mammoths. We invite visitors to come on an expedition to discover the ancient stories of our planet.
