Perfect slope conditions are maintained through regular grooming with a snowcat, and technical snowmaking is used whenever necessary. If you would like to enjoy skiing under the stars, the resort is illuminated for night skiing three times a week. Complete facilities are a matter of course, where you will find a ski bar, ski and snowboard rental, a ski school, and a free parking lot with a capacity of 60 to 70 cars.

The ski tow is located about 17 km from Trutnov, accessible by car or bike, with parking right at the area. It connects to cross-country skiing trails suitable also for winter hiking. It can easily be combined with trips to the rock town of Adršpach – skiing followed by a walk makes for a perfect winter day.

It was established in 2014 on the initiative of Lesy ČR, reaches a height of approximately 22–23 m, and the observation platform is located at a height of 18 m. The tower combines wooden elements with a steel structure and a spiral staircase with oak railings and flooring. A wooden sculpture of a hawk is placed above the main pillar of the tower. The area is complemented by a gazebo, information boards, and a sandstone memorial stone.

In 1447, the castle was purchased by Silesian cities, which had it demolished, and it has not been restored since. It left behind only fragments of foundations, masonry, and rock relics.

Water is fed into the lake by the small river Metuje. Two waterfalls were created at the lake's outlet - the Velký Adršpašský vodopád and, 50 metres further downstream, the Malý Adršpašský vodopád.

Visiting the rock city is rather a summer affair, but even if visitors head here in winter, they will not regret it. The surface of the lake freezes, and the ice creates magical patterns. The waterfalls transform into icefalls during the winter and offer a breathtaking spectacle. Rides standardly begin in May, or in April in the event of fine weather. It is best to inquire in advance.

In addition to the boat rides, many other interesting stops await visitors within these sandstone rocks, which form the largest rock city in the Czech Republic. For example, Sloní náměstí, Krakonošova lenoška, or Milenci and Starosta se starostovou. They received their names according to what the individual rocks resemble with their shapes. In the vicinity, you can stop at the kaplnka svätej Anny (Chapel of Saint Anne), explore the iron-rich spring, or continue further along forest paths to discover other quiet corners of the region.

Since it is significantly smaller, reaching a height of about 4 metres, it was named the Malý Adršpašský vodopád. During the summer months, the water flow in the river decreases due to the warm weather. For this reason, a sluice gate was installed above the waterfall, which can increase its flow at the request of visitors. But beware, it is not quite that simple. Visitors must know the magic spell, or rather shout the secret password Krakonoš.

However, visitors certainly will not set out to this place just for the Malý Adršpašský vodopád. It is strongly recommended to walk through the entire Adršpach rock town and admire the diverse sandstone formations that received their names from objects, people, or animals they resemble. Thus, visitors can see, for example, Milenec, Starosta a starostová, Krakonošova lenoška, and Sloní náměstí. When you turn from the green trail onto the yellow one, which is more demandig. You will reach the picturesque Adršpašské jezírko. On the way there, you will also pass stairs that were constructed as early as 1843. You cannot swim in this lake either, but during the summer season, you can enjoy it not only from the shore but also from a boat with witty commentary.

And what if your head starts spinning from all those rocks? You can visit zámek Adršpach. Although one of its exhibitions is dedicated to rock and high-altitude climbing, you will also find exhibitions on flax processing and weaving, as well as a historical exhibition. At the halfway point, the slope branches into two routes of varying difficulty, ranging from gentle sections to intermediate variants. To ensure a perfect experience even during lower frost levels, we groom the slope daily with a snowcat and, if necessary, use artificial snowmaking. Directly on-site, you can take advantage of the ski school, equipment rental, or refreshments, which will make the start of your winter day more pleasant. Thanks to low attendance and sufficient lift capacity, you will avoid long queues here and enjoy a comfortable ride without unnecessary waiting. The technical facilities are complemented by a modern contactless ticketing system, and a lift is also prepared for our youngest skiers.

Originally, until 1605, only a smaller wooden fountain stood here, which was subsequently replaced by a new one. A dragon made of white sandstone stood out on it, and for this reason, it was called the Dračí studna (Dragon Well). In 1892, it was replaced by the Krakonošova kašna.

The author of the design was a professor at the Trutnov secondary technical school, J. Kirschner. The fountain consists of a granite basin and a sandstone core. And, of course, there is also a metal sculpture of the mountain guardian, Krakonoš. Interestingly, a tin box containing documentary information about this structure was placed in the central part of the well.

The original statue of Krakonoš was manufactured at the A. Castner art foundry in Berlin. However, as it was already considerably damaged by age and weather conditions over time, it was replaced in 2001 by a bronze replica from the workshop of J. Janeček from Vamberk. Since 2015, Krakonoš has been joined by four dwarf companions, so-called gnomes. Their creator is the Trutnov native P. Skavová.

The swimming pool was reopened on 21 July 2002 after an expensive reconstruction of not only the pool but also the buildings and the complex. The year 2006 also brought a new multifunctional building, Rotunda. In 2009, the camping part of the complex was reconstructed.

Ski areál Svoboda nad Úpou is the smallest and most tranquil centre within the SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC complex. It is situated in the picturesque town of Svoboda nad Úpou in the Krkonoše Mountains, at an altitude ranging from 530 to 600 metres above sea level. Thanks to its gentle slopes, the resort is specifically designed for families with children and beginner skiers who are seeking a safe environment for their first skiing attempts.

The centre offers three ski slopes with a total length of approximately 1.1 kilometres. There are three blue (easy) slopes available: Duncan 1 (350 metres), Duncan 2 (350 metres) and the U lesa slope (350 metres). Transport for skiers is provided by three Poma-type ski lifts with a total capacity of approximately 2,000 persons per hour. The lifts are named Duncan (350 metres), U lesa 1 (250 metres) and U lesa 2 (350 metres). All slopes are equipped with an artificial snow-making system and are regularly groomed. On selected days, usually from Thursday to Saturday during the main season, evening skiing is also available on the Duncan 1 and Duncan 2 slopes. The resort also includes a children's ski school and an equipment rental shop.

How to get there

Ski areál Svoboda nad Úpou is located directly in the town of Svoboda nad Úpou, which lies on the main E67 road between Trutnov and Pec pod Sněžkou. A free car park with sufficient capacity is available to visitors directly at the resort. It is also possible to reach the town by public transport. The nearest bus stop is Svoboda nad Úpou, náměstí, from where it is a short walk to the resort. Svoboda nad Úpou also has a railway station on the Trutnov – Svoboda nad Úpou line, from where it is also possible to continue on foot. Within the SkiResort ČERNÁ HORA – PEC, connections between the resorts are provided by ski buses during the main season, which stop in the town.

Svoboda nad Úpou serves as an ideal starting point for exploring the eastern Krkonoše Mountains. Tourists may ascend to the landmark of the Krkonoše, Sněžka (1,603 m a.s.l.), to which marked tourist trails lead, or take a cable car from nearby Pec pod Sněžkou. In the neighbouring Janské Lázně, there is the Stezka korunami stromů Krkonoše and a cabin cable car to Černá hora. Hiking trails will also lead you to the Modré kameny lookout, offering views of the Krkonoše. For history lovers, the town offers the Pohádkové Krkonoše – an exhibition of Krkonoše fairy-tale characters. Near Svoboda nad Úpou, visitors can also discover the lesser-known natural phenomenon of Svobodský kras, which includes, for example, the Medvědí jeskyně.

Lesní hrádek Aichelburg is a romantic neo-Gothic structure that towers high above the Úpa River on the wooded slope of Světlá hora, near the village of Temný Důl in the Krkonoše Mountains. It is not a medieval seat, but rather a unique memorial commissioned by the forestry staff of the Maršov estate in memory of Count Berthold Aichelburg, a renowned manager and patron of the eastern Krkonoše Mountains. Although it originally fell into disrepair, it was reconstructed by a civic association.

Today, a restored castle tower and a wooden guardhouse stand upon the rock. The small castle offers a beautiful view of the Rýchorský hřeben ridge and parts of the eastern Krkonoše Mountains, although it is partially obscured by the surrounding forests. The site is managed by the Veselý výlet information centre in Horní Maršov, where visitors can borrow a key to tour the interior of the tower.

Access

Visitors arriving by car will reach the village of Horní Maršov (approximately 15 km from Trutnov), where parking is available in designated car parks. Bus transport provides direct access to Horní Maršov. By train, the nearest station is Svoboda nad Úpou, from which it is approximately 7 km to Horní Maršov. A marked tourist trail leads from Horní Maršov to the small castle, extending about 3 km uphill. The starting point can be the Veselý výlet information centre in Horní Maršov.

What Is Worth Discovering

The surrounding area is rich in hiking opportunities in the Krkonoše Mountains. A marked trail named Aichelburg leads from Lesní hrádek all the way to Pec pod Sněžkou, spanning about 8 km, with informational stops detailing local landmarks. From nearby Horní Maršov, visitors can set out towards the Rýchorský prales primeval forest or onto the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains. Located not far away is the popular mountain resort of Pec pod Sněžkou, from which a cable car takes visitors up to the summit of Sněžka.
